RNC’s Michael Steele Bondage-Themed Nightclub Personal Nightmare?

I know what you are thinking – the title is a joke, right? Well it’s not, at least according to a Daily Caller report that shows, among other things:

Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.
I am a bit flummoxed as to why the Daily Caller would even carry this exposé and I sure hope they sourced it well. Perhaps too, the salacious nature of this will do so much damage to Steele that he will be forced to resign. The RNC is blaming a staffer which seems pretty weak to me and similar to the same tactic that comes from leftist pols:

“We are investigating the expenditure in question. The story willfully and erroneously suggests that the expenditure in question was one belonging to the chairman. This was a reimbursement made to a non-committee staffer. The chairman was never at the location in question, he had no knowledge of the expenditure, nor does he find the use of committee funds at such a location at all acceptable. Good reporting would make that distinction crystal clear. The committee has requested that the monies be returned to the committee and that the story be corrected so that it is accurate.”

Dan Riehl
, who has good instincts usually, thinks the Daily Caller report is weak. He makes no bones about how he feels about it:
It also sounds as if off the record conversations suddenly became on the record due to amateurish ethics and editorial judgment, and the item includes multiple falsehoods that I imagine will be addressed, assuming actual journalists get involved. You’re pretty bad when it’ll probably fall to Politico, or bloggers, to correct your many errors, Tucker. Welcome to the blogosphere, jerk. Don’t waste too much money before what many bloggers are coming to view as a mostly worthless site crashes and burns.

  1. I am a Steele supporter and I don't believe he is a stupid man. Mistakes? Yes he's making them, but probably has hit the learning curve. Spending? I have to think about this one when considering personal security and most probably daily death threats, but not the nasty night club. That is what makes that "dead fish" smell on this.

  2. Tim – Keep us updated. I lack the time but this whole thing does smell fishy to me.
