Fox News has this:
Outraged family members and community groups are accusing a Muslim group of trying to rewrite history with its plans to build a 13-story mosque and cultural center just two blocks from Ground Zero, where Islamic extremists flew two planes into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.Weasel Zippers has this on Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the man behind the Ground Zero Mosque:“This is a place which is 600 feet from where almost 3,000 people were torn to pieces by Islamic extremists,” said Debra Burlingame, whose brother died in the attack on the Pentagon that day.
“I think that it is incredibly insensitive and audacious really for them to build a mosque, not only on that site, but to do it specifically so that they could be in proximity to where that atrocity happened,” said Burlingame, who is co-founder of 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America.
The 13-story mosque and cultural center will be built on the site of a four-story building that was a Burlington Coat Factory retail store until 9/11, when part of a plane’s landing gear crashed through the roof. The building, which will be razed, currently houses a mosque.
Last night on Hannity, Brigitte Gabriel said that the huge new mosque planned to be built near Ground Zero in New York will be headed by Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf — a man she said has “said publicly the September 11 attack was not perpetrated by Muslims,” and that “the United States was an accessory to the crime.”Video from the show:
I found a site called No Mosques at Ground Zero that has been tracking this issue since last year.
CNN is also covering this along with the NY Post and NBC New York. I also found a Facebook page dedicated to this subject that is quite illuminating. Go here to follow the Facebook page.

I read about this several days ago. It's nuts and as a new yorker I find it a slap in the face.
With all do respect, I think context and refocusing on the reasons behind the attack (the combination of interventionism and Bin Ladin's own political ambitions) will serve you well. Islamism is a mere vehicle. Are you bothered by the mosque currently there? If you are, under what pretext would you remove it? They're just making it bigger and unfortunately for your argument all mosques throughout America will do the same as time goes on.
Reasons? How about crazy? As far as Islam goes, it too was founded by a mad man, just like Al Qaeda.
As far as interventionism goes, while I am not a neo-con and I don't believe in prancing around the world trying to fix everyone's problems through puppet faux-democracies, I think you need to re-think that. Then again, may be not. May be we should turn the clock back and not be involved with the arabs at all, that way they'd still be eating sand. Not a bad thing after all.
As far as the mosque goes, building a bigger one somehow seems incongruent. Then again, Islam is a religion that spreads through proselytization, fierce, forceful and deadly at times. While other religions moved beyond the 7th, 12th, and 19th centuries, it hasn't. So, while I am not happy about it, I don't think the government has much say in it, other than building code. Obviously they have the money, and I would bet they want to make a statement, that they aren't going away, and au contrare, the virus will grow.
