Lou Dobbs Illegal Immigration, Going Soft?

by the Left Coast Rebel

Reader M.D. in Colorado just sent me an article from the WSJ concerning Lou Dobbs ‘smoothing over’ his image with so-called ‘latinos‘. Seemingly, at least according to this article; he is backtracking on the issue of illegal immigration in order to vie favor for either a Senate or Presidential run. Which is absurd and preposterous, disingenuous and ridiculous to the degree that it is true. Why would anyone be interested in Dobbs sans his tough stance against illegal immigration? Why not just toughen his take and stance and perhaps explain it a bit more? Just listen to the way the WSJ describes it:

First, though, Mr. Dobbs is working to repair what a spokesman conceded is a glaring flaw: His reputation for antipathy toward Latino immigrants. In a little-noticed interview Friday, Mr. Dobbs told Spanish-language network Telemundo he now supports a plan to legalize millions of undocumented workers, a stance he long lambasted as an unfair “amnesty.”

And the subsequent reaction from the amnesty crowd:

Frank Sharry, who heads America’s Voice, a group that advocates for legalizing undocumented immigrants, said Mr. Dobbs’s conversion isn’t credible, given his history of opposing efforts to liberalize immigration policies.

This is disappointing…….

I have never watched Dobbs. I saw him on Jon Stewart the other day, and I agreed with Dobbs more than Stewart.

We do not need to get tougher or gentler regarding immigration. The problem with immigration is we have one official policy but completely ignore it. We have millions, probably 10s of millions, of people here illegally while we look the other way. It's too late to enforce the laws currently on the books. The continuing to look the other way is wrong and costly. We need to have some sort of program to move some of these millions of people to legal status and rigorously enforce whatever law we make. If you have to call that "being tough" to sell the policy to the Republican base sitting in their trailer park looking for someone else to blame for their problems, that's how it will have to be promoted.

@ CJ – This one is simple. Dobb's CNN show centered in many ways around the concept of the rule of law being applied to our immigration situation. I live in ground zero of the debate. The very last thing that we need to do is give illegal immigrants amnesty before we adress the source of the problem. Also, I don't appreciate the snipe here as to the GOP base 'sitting in their trailer parks' as I know many influential business folks that would fit into that train of thought. THey are harldly as you describe.

What would it be for lefties? Pot farms? Welfare offices? Communist clubs?

@LCR
Many of those influential business folks (Dem and GOP) like the policy of looking the other way. They think reasonably open borders are good policy for generating growth, and the pain it causes is no worse than the pain caused my mechanization. (I think this too.) But they don't think that argument would sell in a national debate. So they go with the policy of looking the other way.

I'm calling for not looking the other way, even if it means less open borders than I want. I'm saying that people who call for general "toughness" without a thought-out plan are revealing a flaw of their own character.

@ CJ – I hate the policy of looking the other way. I personally know business folks that hate the illegal immigration situation because it puts them at a major disadvantage. They have to compete against businesses that hire illegal immigrants that don't pay taxes, SSI, worker's comp, etc. Naturally said businesses use their 'slave labor' to undercut other businesses and the state of CA could care less. I call for completely closing our border, fining businesses six figures for hiring illegal immigrants and THEN giving amnesty those that don't have criminal records.
