Schwarzenegger – Inner Elephant Kicking the Ass out of the Governator

And it took the fiscal calamity of the entire economy/government of the Golden State to get him back to his ‘roots’, assuming he ever had conservative economic beliefs in the first place.

Arnold in the Sacramento Business Journal here“California’s day of reckoning is here, the state wallet is empty. The bank closed. Credit has dried up. This will be a tremendous opportunity to make our revenues more reliable and less volatile and help the state avoid the boom and bust budgets that have brought us here today.”

On the table? ‘Massive’ cuts to education, health care and prisons. He’s proposing to eliminate or consolidate more than a dozen state departments, boards and commissions if an effort to streamline and cut costs. The state has already begun consolidating technology departments.
Coming up? Consolidation of departments that oversee financial institutions and merging of tax collections as well as modernizing the tax code. Gasp, did I read that right? The ghost of Reagan and Milton Friedman is haunting the Governator. Voices in the distance –
“My son how you have strayed, come back to the light…..we forgive you, your wife has you by the…..and we all know she is a Kennedy.”
Perhaps ‘modernization’ equates to a broad 15% income tax regime? I shouldn’t get my hopes up. Isn’t it fascinating that Republicans morph into Democrats in search of popularity and peer pressure. Only upon such a backsliding implosion that we had recently here in CA does an ass turn back into an elephant….

I hope you are right. I worry that the word modernizing could mean anything. Raise or lower taxes. Someday, somebody will realize that the anti-business atmosphere in the state chased off all of the revenue generators. Now we can boo hoo hoo all the way to the poor house.
Same goes for the USA. Go socialist and we will all be in the poor house.

Opus – I worry about the same, I liked the article and all of the 'cutting' until the word 'modernizing' came in. That could mean a host of socialized schemes……

Hey Left! I just want to say that you are in my prayers for being a voice of reason in the land of Fruits and Nuts. My sister-in-law (an attorney) was sensible until she and her husband moved to Silicon Valley. Now everything is viewed from a social slant. Keep plugging away, brother!

At some point, when governments become that impoverished, one of two things happen. Either they override citizens, if they have the forces necessary (what I call a reverse revolution, since it starts in the government), or the government entity becomes too weak to provide fundamental social control and a void is created.

While watching the government in California (and nationally), it might also be a good idea to look around and see who is in line to restore control, but even before that, who has the power (of arms, really) to survive for a bit while control is lost. I would not want to be rich, or even middle class, in California, if there is a failure.

Things are tight all over the place. Be ready to move, and be willing to do what it takes to move and survive. Of course, that is assuming a regular revolution doesn't occur before one or the other of those other two occurs. Does anyone else feel like they are living in a banana republic?

I hope you're right, but I remember who Arnold sleep with every night: A Kennedy. I don't trust him because he can come back and say he meant something else or that tax increases, larger government is part of the modernization. After all, when married to a Kennedy, we have to worry about which head he'll think with.

I worry that "modernizing" means cutting funding for police, firefighters, libraries, roadway & highway maintenance, etc., but keeping the really important gay pride programs. Ahnold has to do more than talk for me to believe he's not channeling his inner Kennedy. I need to see actions.

Blackandgold – thanks for the support, I have friends that have turned to the dark side from the indoctrination here too, it's almost impossible to escape, especially for young people in the public thought training camps….err, I mean schools.

Doom – I know what you mean and I hope that it doesn't rise to that, although I do know that it is a distinct possibility. I hope that we can engage a widespread revolt to stop this banana republic march…..

Madmath – I think you are right, he's out of office soon anyway…

Cube – I share your fears, I'm afraid that the actions may be the 100% wrong prescription….

Many of us seem to forget that Arnold was raised in Austria. To him, as a European, the statist "solution" is the one that comes naturally. Also, not all Kennedys were "liberals" in the vein of Bobby and Teddy. History shows that elder brother Jack was a fiscal conservative.

Libertarian A – I am aware of the fiscal conservativism of JFK, he would be to the right of many inside the beltway repubs of today……..
