RINOS Facing Extinction? Adios Arlen

Arlen Specter, every Conservatives favorite RINO Republicrat announcing today that he is leaving the Republican party. Please make sure the door hits you on your way out. From the NYT, “Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right…” Really? Horse hockey folks, the Republican party is nothing like it was in 1980 when the Reagan-era started, the party of Goldwater, Reagan, Milton Friedman. The Big-Government Rockefeller types have been in control of the party for years really, the last big hoorah for fiscal conservatives was the 1994 Republican congress victory. What is he even talking about? Better to know and compete against your enemy than to have one your midst.

A recent Rasmussen poll came out that shows Pat Toomey, a former congressman and founder of the Club for Growth, beating Specter by 20% amongst primary voters. Apparently Specter saw the writing on the wall and rather than fight through a primary season and have a high chance of losing, he decided to jettison the Republican Party and then blame the party for being to ‘right-wing’. I wish he had done this ten years ago. Adios Mr. Liberal…

Political fallout from this seems to be that Democrats now have a filibuster-proof Senate, also due to Franken’s likely win against Coleman in Minnesota. The Liberals will have an easy time to ram through their agenda now, I’m not sure that Specter has changed this. Under pressure I am certain that he would have voted with the Democrats on key bills anyway.

That rotten bastard has no business calling himself a Reagan era republican.

LCR,

I prefer it when the enemy is all wearing the same uniform.

“wowie”, as he walks into the room, “so much sarcasism i hear. :)”

“you’d think that principles were considered more important than numbers when it comes to your views on the Senate with what i hear here today. :)”

Cons G – I prefer the same

Griper – thanks for dropping by, you are correct in sniffing out the sarcasm here, I guess I am still young enough to not have compromised my views, I’d rather have my guys stand for free markets and individual rights and the other side can be the statists. I have not been a fan of Specter for years…

79, isn’t it time he already retired ???? One good outcome of this it will put more pressure on moderate Democrats like Evan Bayh, Mary Landrieu, and Blanche Lincoln ; And hopefully get them replaced by 2010 or at least force them vote a little more to the center should they seek reelection. If CT and MA get their act together ( maybe CA will get off the pot, unseat Pelosi) and replace Dodd and Bawney with a moderate democrat we might be looking at a more balanced House/Congress, rather than a filibuster proof one.

Devrim – 79 indeed, it seems that liberalism breeds longevity. Interesting points but I wouldn’t hold my breath on CA w/ Queen Pelosi. Let’s hope to the others…..

Seriously I have to pull my head out of the sad. I had no idea he was still alive. Apparently I won’t miss him then.

Cracks me up honestly that this dude is even taken seriously. Talk about “going with the flow”. Regan is rolling in his grave….

LCR, if MA and CT don’t vote Dodd and Bawney out of office (on the basis of bailouts, kickbacks from bailouts, bonuses, language inserted in the bailout bill etc etc etc), they should be forced to secede from the Union for being STUUUUUUUPID !!!!!

BTW, I just saw the Air Force One photo op over the Statute of Liberty; the people running and screaming from buildings and got a tingly feeling on my leg; at my workplace, we have the decency to declare ” this is a drill “. DC isn’t even a state so kicking them out of the Union should be even a lesser problem.

Just Jenn – I agree, he looks like a shrunken head

Banteringblonde – I sure don’t take him seriously, the media and liberals do

Devrim – MA and CT are lost cause as is VT

…and what took him so long? I think you’re right about the filibuster thing – he was voting w/ the Dems anyway.

Left Coast Rebel said…

susannag – it’s true, he wouldn’t have held the line on the filibuster, I can’t believe that the David Brooks of the world think that he would have.
