A deep recession, a free-fall in government revenue, a myriad of new programs and taxes coming out of Washington. The gambit is on whilst the wool is over the American citizen’s eyes….
Does this sound funny? Worthwhile? Offensive? If the trailers above and below are any indication, “The Goode Family” could truly be the best animated series coming to a flatscreen near you. It premieres tonight at 9 pm on ABC.
Listen to this review from the Daily News here – “Gerald and Helen Goode drive a hybrid car, eat vegan and fret over what to call their black neighbor. Helen refuses to shop at a supermarket that sells cheap bottled water because “they don’t even have a mission statement.”Helen also has a myopic view of her relationship with her teenage daughter, Bliss, assuming they can be BFF because the Goodes are like, you know, so totally non-judgmental.” Poking fun of the most judgementalist, self-avowedly non-judgemental folks in our society? The same ones that claim to ‘openmindedness’ yet can’t stand for the conservative/libertarian point of view? And from Hollywood you say? How can this be? I have to laugh here folks, I really do. I truly know people here in Southern California that fit this description to a ‘t’. They live in a complete bubble surrounded by people that think identically to them and are never challenged.
The Goode family applies the mantra “What would Al Gore do?” to their everyday lives. They live day to day with a clear focus of reducing their ‘carbon-footprint.’ They feed their lone little doggy veggies only. I assume the he is named after the Left-famed Che Guevera? Mr. Goode even separates two-ply toilet paper that his wife mistakenly bought.
Mike Judge, creator of “Beavis and Butthead” in the 1990’s and the recently cancelled (after 13 seasons), “King of the Hill,” is the director of the show. I love how Mike Judge describes Gerald Goode (he also does his voice on the show) as being “an administrator at a community college, he comes from a long line of over-educated academic liberals”, Co-writer John Altschuler – “We always decribe Helen (Goode),as a local activist who someday dreams of being an activist, someone who knows that everyone has a right to their own opinion but she just can’t stand it…”
Watch it tonight.
I’m pouring over the news outlets this morning and the MSM here is teeming with news of the Obamanation’s supreme court choice today. Nearly every source is pointing out her ancillary credentials, those being that:
a). She is hispanic
b). She is a woman
To these two points a little later. From the AP this morning – “The White House announcement ceremony was a picture of diversity, the first black president, appointing the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, joined by the Vice President who is white.”
I’ll let that speak for itself.
On May 9 re: Justice Souter’s resignation on White House.gov here the Obamanation- “I will seek someone who understands that justice isn’t about some abstract legal theory or footnote in a case book. It is also about how our laws affect the daily realities of people’s lives — whether they can make a living and care for their families; whether they feel safe in their homes and welcome in their own nation.
I view that quality of empathy, of understanding and identifying with people’s hopes and struggles as an essential ingredient for arriving as just decisions and outcomes.” So clearly we see a theme here.
Today on the same site here, the Obamanation’s overriding credentials for a Supreme nominee – “These two qualities are essential, I believe, for anyone who would sit on our nation’s highest court. And yet, these qualities alone are insufficient. We need something more. For as Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The life of the law has not been logic; it has been experience.” Experience being tested by obstacles and barriers, by hardship and misfortune; experience insisting, persisting, and ultimately overcoming those barriers. It is experience that can give a person a common touch and a sense of compassion; an understanding of how the world works and how ordinary people live.” Again the theme, albeit the word ’empathy’ not being used.
To a Statist such as the Obamanation, moral relativism through the prism of ‘diversity’, ’empathy’, ‘compassion’, etc are the key philosophical points on choosing a Supreme Court judge. The Constitution of the United States does not budge, does not bend or cater to special interest groups with redress-obsession. It does not show ‘compassion’ or ’empathy.’ It clearly enumerates, as I have said before, those things that our government implicitly cannot do to us. And this is why our founding document is so different than any other country in world history. The activism of today’s socialism and fleet from our founding principles put these restricted powers at risk every day. And thus it does not surprise me one bit to read, in the Obamanation’s own words, that a Justice is to strive for some sort of ambiguous, higher-level subjective reasoning in the Court. This subjective reasoning and ethic changes from bullhorn to demagogue. It simply proves my point, in his own words above from the White House site. Liberals/progressives stand for the collective. Hence the obsession with Sotomayor’s race
and sex identity. Her sex and race have absolutely nothing to do with her understanding of the Constitution or philosophy and prove to me that ‘diversity’ is just a code word for collectivism. Our society values a mob-mentality ethic, an ethos that changes with the wind….
Update 1 : The NYT has an article here about a speech on ethnicity and sex that Sotomayer gave in 2001, Sotomayer – ““I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
If you think that this could possibly been taken out of context click here for the full text of the speech. Confimation of racecentism that I suspected earlier, I’m sure that there will be many more stories to come….
Update 2 : Newsbusters has a great story here highlighting the fact that ABC news is minimizing the ‘Liberal’ label for Sotomayor, yet used ‘Conservative’ for Alito frequently…..
Update 3 : Reason.com has a great article here laying out the framework for Sotomayor’s preference for racial preferences and gun control…..
Memorial – the origin of the word dates back to 1350 AD, from the Latin root memorialis meaning “for or containing memoranda“. I am pondering our nation’s Memorial dawn-to-dusk salute of our heroes, fallen and survived. Of history back to our founding, of current conflicts. The very essence and nature of our heroes – to protect that which we cherish and value more than anything – our republic, our freedoms and our country.
Reflecting back to memories of my youth vivid stories come to life. A grandfather’s recollection of being trailed by a Japanese submarine while aboard an American destroyer en route to India, 1942. Depth-charge explosions against the underwater foe were no comforting slumber-aid to the man. A man of 17 years of age away from his new bride and family for 4 years. It still seemed to him like yesterday.
Or another grandfather, unable to attend overseas thus recruited to engineer the very warrior-vessels housed of steel and flesh that were sent off thousands of miles to fight. Welding-torch in hand this man, also a ‘kid’ by today’s standards, helped fashion our fleet in Long Beach, California. Years of toil and sweat for the war-effort, it seemed to him like yesterday.
Or of the Twin-Towers falling on that fateful morning of September the 11th, 2001. Of the shocking reminder to a culture that in many ways has forgotten – our freedoms are not to be taken for granted or voted away to the bullhorn-demagogue of the day. For that as soon as we forget, they shall be gone…..
“Elections belong to the people. It is their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters”– Abraham Lincoln.
As I said yesterday, one of my favorite GOPers is Tom McClintock. He gave this speech here to the Council for National Policy last week – one of the best that I have seen championing liberty and the fight for conservatism. This is a moving, must-read for anyone interested in advancing freedom and the limited government roots of our nation.
Does this sound like a RINO? – “Voters have swept our party from office after a failed Republican administration that abandoned conservative principles. The most left-wing president in our nation’s history has taken office……his agenda includes radical intervention into energy markets highly inflationary monetary policy…..dramatically increasing overall domestic spending with deficits as far as the eye can see….”
McClintock believes we are living directly in parallel to the era of Jimmy Carter – “You remember those years. Jimmy Carter’s policies brought us double digit unemployment AND double digit inflation; interest rates at 21%….just a few years later, it was morning again in America. Four years of Jimmy Carter produced eight years of Ronald Reagan, and looking back on it, that wasn’t such a bad trade, was it?”
On the tide turning in America – ” What we are seeing in the polls is a gradual awakening of the American people….we saw that two summers ago with the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill….we saw that just a month ago when Rick Santelli told a routine cable broadcast that he was sick and tired of being forced to pay for his neighbor’s mortgage…”
On RINOs, Colin Powell, the ‘Listening Tour’, Megan McCain and ‘Moderates’,, Statists in the Republican Party – “a new chorus of hand-wringing that said we had to get over our nostalgia for Reagan…it’s the same kind of hand wringing that Ulysses Grant confronted at the Battle of Wilderness….to those that say we should put the Reagan Era behind us – I have a better idea. Let’s put the Bush era behind us.”
On what the party stands for, of what it used to and what it should – this is my favorite part – “We stand for freedom. We stand for abundance. We stand for individual responsibility. Freedom. Abundance and Responsibility. That is our platform.”
I’m coming away from this speech this Saturday morning, thoughts racing after reading this man’s words again. Brilliant in it’s simplicity, the platform and message that would eradicate the march of socialism, liberalism, statism and fascism today. If I were to run for office,(albeit not standing a chance), these would be my 3 pillars in the words of the Left Coast Rebel –
Could I win on this simple platform? Or have we lost America so badly that we deserve the Obamanation?
Highlight from the Reason video with Nick Gillepsie – “Just as the Terminator was programmed to fight Sarah Connor, Government is programmed to grow and grow and fight every effort to cut it back.” Rep Tom McClintock – “(this is) Because government concentrates it’s benefits and diffuses the costs.” Later in the video McClintock goes on to explain how the Obamanation, (as I have said) is Californiaizing the nation and how disastrous that will potentially be. Heard of Tom McClintock? If you haven’t Mr. McClintock had been a great state senator in CA for years and just last year narrowly defeated his Democrat opponent for a Congressional run. He’s now one of the clarion voices for economic libertarianism in the House in the Republican Party. I support him wholeheartedly. I put him in the band of a few, Ron Paul, Paul Ryan, Michelle Bachmann and a few others. By the way, if you don’t watch the entire video above, at least view the part at 3:10, the Union activist here personifies what CA is up against – millions of folks like this and a Legislature beholden….
Today’s LA Times – “Washington declines to help CA, at least for now“
David Axelrod, the senior advisor to the Obamanation at the White House today – ” Look, we’re going to examine what we can do. What we need to do, however, is to treat states fairly and that means uniformly, whatever we do for one state, there will be other states who also will want to do that. And there’s a limit to what the government can do.” Sounds nice, but I am extremely skeptical. The White House pols know that this is not a popular idea in the country, I imagine that they are obfuscating the issue at this point and then they will sneak in something on a late Friday evening, eg. Federally insuring new CA state bonds.
Barney Frank disagreed with the White House talking points, (shocking) – “Their view is they need legislation (translation: bailout), and we’re going to try to give it to them.” This is the same Barney Frank that was a longstanding member of the Progressive Caucus, a congressional group of 77 members that has direct ties to Democratic Socialist of America. Read my writeup on this organization and other direct socialist/communist/Democrat ties here. Barney, do you think that taxpayers in other states think that CA should be bailed out? Readers, what do you think?
Today the LA Times again – “Poor would be hit hard by CA budget cuts” here. Nice propagandizing title? Equivalent concern at this ‘paper’ for families, businesses and entrepreneurs over the years. Of course not. Anyway the story goes on . Apparently now the Governator is planning on slashing welfare programs, state health insurance for poor people and low-income college grants. In particular he is considering dismantling CalWorks, ( a broad-based welfare program ‘aiding’ 500,000 families, many of which are illegal immigrants), and moth-balling Healthy Families, a socialized med system that provides medical coverage to 928,000 children and teens. I have also read that this program is wrought with corruption and serves many illegal immigrants, there are close to a million people on this! Up for grabs too is slashing 750 million from programs designed to rehabilitate inmates. Yes you read that correctly. Almost 1 billion a year for inmate rehabilitation in CA.
Tuesday’s vote has apparently spread the message that the state has to find the money to balance the books, (remember, like I said before, by law CA cannot run a deficit). God forbid that our government here would need to take tough steps, trim the fat, and cut back on bureaucrat-union largess. I’d say that this is the tip of the iceberg if CA is to become functional and competitive again. Time to take the budget to the chopping block just like every family and business has had to. Or does that make too much sense?
Democrats and Republicans losing support, Independent affiliation rallying, America still a conservative nation for the most part.
At least that’s how I see it according to new info at the Pew Research here.
From the article – “Both political parties have lost adherents since the election and an increasing number of Americans identify as independents. Owing to defections from the Republican Party, independents are more conservative on several key issues than in the past. Independents are more skittish than they were two years ago about expanding the social safety net and are reluctant backers of greater government involvement in the private sector. “
Interesting. The study shows that independents as a whole are far more conservative, especially on economic freedom and taxes than they have been in the past. Defections from the big-government conservatism and betrayal of Reagan ideals for the Republican Party culminating in this? I personally know many friends and family that have changed party affiliation from Repub to either Independent or Libertarian. The Republican Party lost it’s way on the the most party-defining issues, taxes, big government spending, and the fiscal future of the US.
It would seem that the Obamanation agenda of taxing everything that moves, pushing untold trillions in debt onto our children and increasing the scope and oppression of the Federal government is not something that the public favors. Not so fast. As shown to the right, a majority of the public does not favor government helping the needy and going into debt to do so, and a majority thinks the Feds have too much power, although down from 2007. The glaring inconsistency? 86% of the public thinks that the government needs to make health care affordable and accessible. This is why the statist beat the drum incessantly on socialized medicine. Then in a 180 degree turn, respondents worry about the government becoming too involved in health care 46% to 54%.
Vice President Cheney – “a lot rides on our President’s understanding of the security policies that preceded him. And whatever choices he makes concerning the defense of this country, those choices should not be based on slogans and campaign rhetoric, but on a truthful telling of history.”
Translation – “Sir, since you are President Campaigner, Community Organizer, may it be known that talking points to Cindy Sheehan won’t provide defense for our shores….”
Vice President Cheney – “For me, one of the defining experiences was the morning of 9/11 itself That was Flight 77, the one that ended up hitting the Pentagon. With the plane still inbound, Secret Service agents came into my office and said we had to leave, now. A few moments later I found myself in a fortified White House command post somewhere down below.”
Translation – “This could happen to you too, albeit the fact that the ‘secret’ command post is not so secret anymore….?”
Vice President Cheney – “Our government prevented attacks and saved lives through the Terrorist Surveillance Program, which let us intercept calls and track contacts between al-Qaeda operatives and persons inside the United States. The program was top secret, and for good reason, until the editors of the New York Times got it and put it on the front page. After 9/11, the Times had spent months publishing the pictures and the stories of everyone killed by al-Qaeda on 9/11. Now here was that same newspaper publishing secrets in a way that could only help al-Qaeda. It impressed the Pulitzer committee, but it damn sure didn’t serve the interests of our country, or the safety of our people.”
Translation – “Fighting terrorism is hard enough, having the Bolshevik press against us; although predictable, is an evil to overcome…”
Vice President Cheney – “Over on the left wing of the president’s party, there appears to be little curiosity in finding out what was learned from the terrorists. It’s hard to imagine a worse precedent, filled with more possibilities for trouble and abuse, than to have an incoming administration criminalize the policy decisions of its predecessors.”
Translation – none needed….
Remember Ricky Schroder from the 1980’s tv show Silver Spoons? Anyway, Mr. Schroder is now 39 years old and has been married to the same woman for 17 years . He’s also the father of 4 children. He has made his way through Hollywood in his adulthood appearing in NYPD Blue, 24, and Scrubs. I will extend him props for being in Hollywood and remaining married to the same lady alone. He’s also a devout Mormon.
Those things known, CNSNews.com caught up with Rick Schroder at the recent White House Correspondents Dinner here. Schroder re: the Obamanation – “I don’t think he’s getting that support he needs from those other folks so I guess time will tell,” said Schroder. “I don’t know if it was the right decision to go into debt as we have so I guess time will tell, but I’m always inclined to not spend more than we bring in – as a household, as a man, and as a country. So, my inclination is it’s risky.”
Hmm, well said, albeit very basic common sense. Isn’t funny how someone in Hollywood says something equatable to 2nd grade math skills and common knowledge, ie that one should live within his means, and it stands out as newsworthy…..
Schroder then said that “he hoped that the Obamanation doesn’t raise taxes higher than Clinton did…” and continued – ““But, you know, when you start talking about 40 percent income tax and 10 percent state tax in California and almost 10 percent sales tax in California, it’s getting a bit ridiculous.” Well said here too, this is a great lesson for limited government proponents – keep it simple. Point out the obvious – that taxation in excess of 50% is ridiculous and scandalous.
Update : This just in, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, Sean Penn, Danny Glover and Susan Sarandon held a press conference today criticizing Rick Schroder’s recent comments.
Spike Lee – “Rick should know better, we have uniform conformity here in Hollywood, our Leader is not to be criticized in such a way…”
Danny Glover – ” Rick is clearly a racist, we have to start the effort now to boycott Silver Spoons Nick at Night reruns, this must be stopped!”
Susan Sarandon – “I think that the authorities should pursue Nick Schroder based on egregious hate-crimes violations.”
Update : This just in, CNN, upon hearing about Schroder’s racist, anti-Obmanation comments sent in Susan Roesgen to cover it live…..
Roesgen – “Well, you can clearly see here that Ricky Shcroder’s right-wing comments are racist and catering to the right-wing network Fox News. He clearly doesn’t understand that his homestate of CA is getting bailed out and he shouldn’t complain about his taxes, I have to hand it over to you, this is clearly not family-friendly…”
And after a brief moment of sanity in the midst of Hollywood, one lone voice amongst them is silenced…..
Anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that the US car industry is in dire straits and in major need of a complete business-plan overhaul, restructuring, and jettisoning of strangling union burdens and legacy costs. The One wants to save the car industry as well, right? Well, I had CNBC on mute this morning while enjoying my coffee (to watch the market sans talking-head chatter), and I saw the Obamanation at a press conference, ( a daily occurrence it seems). “What socialistic nonsense is the One talking about today, what raping and pillaging of the free-market notion, flavor of the day?” Destroying any vestige of what remains of the once proud US car manufacturing sector, of course! How is he doing this? Well in typical liberal mental deformation fashion, He is hawking new overall fleet fuel mileage standards, increasing
the mandated MPG rating to 35mpg. Wow, this will save Detroit folks, just in time!
The Bolshevik pols in Washington waxing romantically over European streets, dotted with go-bot sissy cars the size of a golf cart. Note downside of said car at picture to the right and left? Safety risk of small tin-can cars aren’t an issue, consumer-driven free-market choice be damned! The faint whisper of a once-free man heard in the distance – “But I want my wife and future children transported in a large and safe truck or SUV!” The pleas for freedom and sanity are drowned out by the incessant wailing of the Enviro – Left. “We’re saving Mother Earth, find your hemp sandals and sing with me, “Gaia rejoice”!
I awake from a Mother Earthly nightmare (or is that the mother of all earthly nightmares?) and find a pondering thought. “Surely this will not cost the taxpayer, the economy, the consumer anything, right? After all the One is praising this?”
From the AP here – “Administration officials said consumers were going to pay an extra $700, anyway, for mileage standards that had already been approved. The Obama plan adds another $600 to the price of a vehicle, a senior administration official said, bringing the total cost to $1,300 by 2016.” I feel so much better, how kind of them to add only $600 to the Bush-enacted increase,(gotta love the Nixonian Republicans), in mandated MPG law. Money grows on trees, right? Especially with future taxpaying young ‘uns paying the bill for costs like this, who cares! Junior on grandpa’s lap 2016, ” Grandpa, how come when you were my age, everyone could work hard and afford a car?” Grandpa – “Well, son, that was before Uncle Sam owned the car companies and made them so damned expensive that no one can afford a car, but at least the Unions are employed…
the Wise One, President Obamanation knows that Americans should take mass-transit and bicycles to work anyway junior, that’s just one of the reasons that He is president for life – remember that we don’t have the right to complain anymore He knows us better than we know ourselves, let us bow our heads in prayer….”
Total cost to America for these new mandates? Again from the AP – “The auto industry will be required to ramp up production of more fuel-efficient vehicles on a much tighter timeline than originally envisioned. It will be costly; the Transportation Department last year estimated that requiring the industry to meet 31.6 mpg by 2015 would cost nearly $47 billion.”
Do numbers even matter any more? $40 billion, $400 billion? $4 trillion? Free cars, Smart Cars, Cash for Clunker Cars, no need to fret, money grows on banana-republic inflation trees…… socialism breeds inequity, America will be brought to her knees…..
I found these two different stories over at Cnsnews.com. First off, how about this headline?
U.S. Spending $117,000 to Study ‘Party Drug’ Use in Brazil
Details? It seems that our favorite taxpayer funded organization the National Institute of Health is at it again. Last week it was millions for conducting studies on boozing Chinese prostitutes, this story, albeit less tax money, is equally aburd.
Issues at hand with the study?
According to the Federal $100k + grant abstract “there are few published scientific studies of the health and social consequences of club drug use in general, and none that have been conducted in Brazil. Within this context, the overall goal of the proposed study is to develop the capacity of local investigators to address this emerging health problem through a collaborative research process.” Perhaps, but in Brazil? Really?
The desired end result of the study? ”To monitor 200 drug users aged 18 to 39 and examine their life histories, alcohol and drug abuse, and the progression of those habits. Its immediate goal is to develop Portuguese-language materials for local drug treatment centers.”
Wow, now that is America-leading in the foreign affairs department. Is it worth 6 figures+ to do this? You decide.
Next story from the NIH as well, (this one is from a week and a half ago) –
Feds Will Spend $400,000 to Study Drinking and Sex Habits of Homosexuals in Argentina
Now we’re getting somewhere folks. This sounds like a worthy cause, hence the 4x higher price tag.
Purpose of this study?
“The study will send researchers to six bars in Buenos Aires to interview both patrons and proprietors in an effort to discover what it is about those bars that may encourage the risky behavior.” What it is about those bars? You mean that all bars aren’t meat-markets in the first place? Will the researchers have to go in undercover, hide in the shadows? Or will they participate?
This studies abstract – “Targeting public venues in Buenos Aires where men meet, alcohol is consumed, and sexual behavior occurs, the goal of this two-year exploratory study is to understand the various factors that contribute to the creation of a high-risk sexual space.”
And they couldn’t go to Argentinian soccer stadiums to elicit respondees for this study? I think we see blatant and unfair bar attendee classification status here. Really! Joking aside, more absurd physical abuse of the US taxpayer.
Anyone that knows my views on politics in the state that I reside in know that I think that for the most part it is a lost cause. A third-tier nation banana-republic governance – run by powerful lobbyists, unions, socialist-liberal Obamanation types, topped with grovelling illegal immigrants given government goodies from the day they set foot here. The state is bankrupt morally and financially and losing productive taxpayers en masse. The fiscal budget here was bleeding to the tune of 40+ billion recently. In fact, we didn’t even have a budget until our illustrious Governator RHINO Boy got just enough Repubs in the Legislator to push through massive tax-hikes and debt, and other cuts, skirting the tough decisions that needed to be made and pushing future fiscal calamity down the road a bit. Kicking the can down the road as they say – more akin to throwing a cat from a 20 story building and hoping it lands on it’s feet.
Arnold Schwarzenegger symbolizes more things that are wrong with the Republican Party than I can even list here. I remember years ago when he was running to oust the last sham of a governor, Gray “Bengal Tiger” Davis. Arnold showed a lot of potential. He gave a speech to the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers group that was incredible. Economic libertarianism, and Republican ideals shone. After his first year in office, he got the best score for a state governor from the Cato Institute. Something was amiss however. Slowly, year after year, Republicans have been shown to have been bamboozled by this man, a transformation of a Republican governor into another liberal Democrat. Demonstrated by Arnoldism such as global-warming alarmism, runaway spending and deficits, mismanagement leading to tax raises and more businesses leaving the state. Need I say more? Why even have the ‘R’ next to his name? Another case for clear party delineation again.
Leading to the main reason for my piece. On Tuesday, CA voters will make a decision on several ballot-measures that curtail the recent fiscal insanity. The Governator on the measures here -“If the propositions do not pass it could mean releasing thousands of prisoners, borrowing billions of dollars from already-strapped local governments and even drilling off the Santa Barbara coast. ” Hmm, I like the last part, I’ll trade prisoners running rampant and borrowing for drilling off of Santa Barbara. I mean, after all they are probably going to do the former anyway, why not drill? Note the pandering scare tactics on display? God forbid that we responsibly use our natural resources in the state, rather than pandering to and being hamstrung by the Enviro-Left. I want to curse here, give me a break.
Two stories crossing my desk in the last few days that cover the ridiculous, preposterous, fiscal incompetence that our government is heralding through. This fiscal malfeasance seems to be coming to a head, a turning point shall I say, when one sees stories like I am about to show. It’s as if our ‘leaders’ are so brazen at this turn in our history that there isn’t even the slightest semblance of fiscal sanity in the upper echelons of our government. Naked displays of the ”the political allocation of wealth and opportunity” as George Will put it in his recent brilliant column here.
Speaking of naked – I bring your attention to this story here, “NIH Funds $2.6 Million Study to Get Prostitutes in China to Drink Less.”
No, folks this is not a joke, (although laughingly pathetic), our own Federal government is spending $2.6 million of our tax-dollars to make sure that prostitutes in China drink less on the job. Bankrolled by the National Institute of Health, the program is aimed at studying 700 prostitutes, (in China no-less), then using the findings to help prevent HIV. Is Ted Kennedy leading the studies? I’m sure he wishes he was. It doesn’t say here. What it does say however is that the study looks at ‘why prostitutes engage in dangerous sex while drunk.’ Sex is dangerous, or more so for Chinese hookers only when they are tipsy? Is the world upside down?
The next story here is from the ‘green’ section of the lovely MSNBC website. The title of said article? “Congress Considers ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Proposal.” The article I am reading here is saying that the bill would basically give drivers ”vouchers of up to $4,500 when they turn in their old fuel-inefficient vehicles for scrapping and buy vehicles that get good gas mileage.” Also, ” People could also turn in their old cars for vouchers that could be used to ride public buses and trains.” Wow, even on the surface, that must be the most stupid, open-ended to corruption, nonsensical, pie-in-the-sky proposal I have heard of. Even worse than spending tax-dollars on booze-free Chinese hookers.
And why is this worse than paying for keeping the ‘sauce’ out of the hands of Chinese prostitutes? Price tag folks.RINO Olympia Snowe – “The bill envisions the program operating for four years and encouraging the retirement of up to one million vehicles a year.” According to the bill that is being floated around, owners of vehicles with fuel economy ratings of 18 or less would get somewhere between $4500, or $2000, either cash or a credit for a new car. Corruption, abuse, fraud, waste, in a program like this? Nah, not with these guys at the helm with our tax-dollars. To get an idea of the costs here, multiply 1 million vehicles per year by an average of say $3,000, then multiply by 4 years. The total? 12 billion dollars. How much should we multiply this to account for fraud, ineptitude, waste, etc? I’d say 2x would do, which then = 24 billion dollars. All without even batting an eye, out of thin air, printed, inflated and taxed onto future generations…..
Quote of the day from the beloved Senator Chuckie Schumer Democrat of NY and co-sponsor of the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ bill – “This is an even better trade-in offer than they could get from any car dealership.” I am speechless. Atlas Shrugging, check, check, check.
God bless Ron Paul for being the clarion voice in Congress – the lone man against the big-government Leviathan. Hat tip to Conservative for Change for finding this video from this morning. What an amazing breath of fresh air to transcribe Dr. Paul’s words for you dear reader in contrast to having to listen to the Obamanation’s ASU collectivist speech yesterday. Being that I can weigh the words of each man against each other, it’s crystal-clear who should be seated in the Oval Office.
Excerpts from the video from Dr. Paul –
On Pelosi taking heat for the ‘torture’ flap – “I think that it’s a benefit because she might slow up on nationalizing health care, we are quickly socializing the country and spending ourselves into oblivion….”
On his prediction in 2003 of the housing collapse – “Washington D.C. is permeated by Keynsian economic thinking (government spending to stimulate the economy reader), very few even know the name Austrian economics ( free markets, free minds, entrepreneurship, sound dollar), and understand the business cycle, I was concerned about the bubble building in 1971 when the gold was de-linked from the dollar…” ” I believe that we are moving to the collapse of the dollar and it will be much worse than what we have witnessed.”
On the fact that the same leaders that created the crisis, now claiming to have the solutions – “Those individuals who did not predict what was to come now are predicting that the down turn has ended….I was on the fringe in 2003, now I have 100 or 200 people who care (referring to the reps on board for the ‘Audit the Fed’ movement), we haven’t had free-market economics, now they are blaming capitalism and not enough regulation for all of these problems, we’ve had crony capitalism, we’ve had inflationism, corporatism, big-government , we’ve not had true free-market capitalism so we have to define it.”
I’m not a fan of talking-head Joe Scaroborough. At least he has the integrity to acknowledge Paul’s accuracy in predicting our current economic problems and his true solution to return to Austrian free-market ideals to save our country and it’s once-stalwart system. Check out the Ludwig Mises Institute here to see what the Austrian school of thought is all about.
Obamanation, deep in contemplation of the eager collegial masses -“How can I twist my speech to spread a greater good, totalitarian dictate without sounding like a Greater Good Totalitarian Dictator?”
Case in point, the gasoline price in Dutchland? Consider an imported price of $3/gallon. Ok, that sounds close to what our gas prices are here, right? Not so fast. Once it is imported the Dutch government slaps a $3.50/gallon excise tax regardless of price. So consider then that the $3/gallon import price suddenly becomes $6.50/gallon on the street. But that’s not enough. Dutch pols then get another 19% VAT (value added tax) on top of the total price. In this case that would be $1.23. Total street level gas price? $7.73.
The Obamanations, progressives and various Statists in America think that we need to be more like Europe. In truth, we need to be the exact opposite of Europe. Always oppose hidden taxes like the excise tax – these are the tools of Statists that want to pull the wool over the public’s eyes. Remember too that our founders fled Europe because of excessive taxation and Statism. A truth that today’s youth have long forgotten……
Years ago I delved into the fictional worlds of Ayn Rand’s works, one book was a notable favorite. Written in 1957 the dystopian Atlas Shrugged paints a vivid picture of self-motivated, individualistic business leaders and industrialists going on strike against a forceful and oppressive US government. The same government that in reacting to financial calamities in the country, go about blaming the very business people that drive the engines of economic success. Sound familiar? The heroes of the story refuse to let the bureaucrats of their day exploit them for the purpose of the ”greater good” thus following one of the main characters, John Galt to a secret location of arbitration. Thus the term ‘going Galt.’
For young minds and perhaps readers and thinkers open to different ideas, Rand’s works offer limitless potential. She propounds many solutions to today’s societal ills, mainly in that our government and culture have rejected the value of reason and the sacredness of the individual soul. Instead we have substituted these things with subjective reasoning, (moral relativism, multiculturalism), and altruism,( collectivism, socialism, statism, stigmatization of financial success).
Amazingly I found here that Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged recently was outselling the Obamanation’s latest book at the beginning of the year. Likewise with Mark Levin’s Liberty and Tyranny here, Americans are searching for solutions and answers – ethos’ and ideas that hearken back to America’s founding and our Great Experiment in governance that stood proudly for individualism – the pursuit of happiness.
I am jolted from a melancholy look-back to my discovery of Rand’s uniquely positive Way things ought to be whilst I sift through several stories of the day. This story here, “Obamanation Endorses Health Industry’s Goal to Rein in Cost.” The event was a miraculous meeting where The One, just by his Sheer Messianicness met with medical leaders and vowed to ‘save’ the US health care system from, not for America. 2 trillion bucks in savings over 10 years and all they had to do was shake hands! And the State-Controlled media echoes the talking points verbatim. The ultimate in Federal Government centralization, pols and cronies at the helm of life and death issues of individuals. The best analysis that I saw on the net of this here. The Obamanation yesterday in his own words – “Health care is (on an) unsustainable course that threatens businesses, government and families.” No, sir, you, Washington, and your elitists are the biggest threats to business, government, and families. Atlas Shrugging – Check.
Next stop, the Social Security ‘trust fund’, (never mind there is no such thing, just dusty IOU’s in a drawer), will become insolvent by 2037 here, four years earlier than expected. Likewise, and even more dire is the case for Medicare. The cause? The deep recession, trillions of dollars of deficit spending because of the financial crisis. The cure? More deficit spending, raising taxes for a bankrupt system, and chastising the very ones that pursue a ‘profit’ from the very business endeavours that the Obamanation and various cronies despise. Atlas Shrugging – Check.
Remember all of those poor folks that signed up for mortgages without knowing/reading the contract? Well it seems that credit card holders have done the same thing too. Obamanation on Monday (on credit card holders here) – “But they also have a right to not get ripped off by the sudden rate hikes, unfair penalties and hidden fees that have become all-too common.” Hmm, no they don’t. They have the right to not sign credit card contracts with crappy rate hikes, penalties and ‘hidden’ fees. They have the right to live within their means. They have the right to not have an authoritarian Nanny State looking over their shoulder, even if they do make financial mistakes. People learn from mistakes. Intrusive governments only subsidize financial problems and mistakes. Americans reduced to grovelling serfdom. Atlas Shrugging -Double Check
The Federal Leviathon’s tentacles seemingly encompassing us more each day, “Never let a good crisis go to waste” – Obamanation right-hand man Rahm Emmanuel. Senator Max Baucus letting the cat out of the bag : “Tax Hikes Likely to Pay for Health care.” The Senate’s top tax writer said Tuesday he is considering limits on the tax-free status of job-based health insurance to help pay for President Barack Obama’s plan to cover all Americans. Story here. In layman’s terms folks – all of those corporate workers out there, you teachers and such that are given health care as a ‘benefit’, well this may be taxed to pay for ‘health care for all.’ I wonder what the public will think of this? Atlas Shrugging – Triple Check
Next story here – “Obama Seeks Estate Tax Hike.” The proposals as described “take on what we believe are a series of unjustifiable loopholes, unjustifiable tax breaks that we simply can not afford,” – senior White House official. At stake? Exemptions for estates back down to $1 million and a fat 55% rate on estates above that. Work all of your life to create a business, a family and a legacy? Pay taxes at every point at over 50% of your income? Uncle Sambomination appreciates this upon your passing? Not quite, fork it over serf-boy, we found a way decades ago to double tax you. Constitutional? Funny, that old dusty document is so flexible by the Supreme Court these days that a session looks like a Gumby coming-out party. Atlas Shrugging – Quadruple Check.
At least the Daily Nightmare that occupies the Oval Office is consistent with his party……
Hat tip to Eric Dondero over at Libertarian Republican for finding this video from the Tax Foundation…..brillliant.
The above is the infamous ‘fly-over’ picture, is it worth over $300k to you dear taxpayer? Today the seven page review of the fly-over incident was released here, and Director of the White House Military Office resigned. I noticed several things in the report:
And there you have it folks. Shouldn’t we thank our lucky stars that we have such bureaucratic geniuses in charge of our beloved Federal government. Such incredible people of high intellectual fortitude and moral stature. And that is assuming that you even believe what you read in the memo. Imagine that bureaucrats like this are in charge of our nuclear missile silos. Imagine that they hold the keys to our very existence. Imagine that our Obamanation wants the same government that cannot even coordinate a flight of Air Force One over Manhattan to control ever more facets of American life. To control matters of life and death with our Health Care system, our once proud Free Market system. Twilight Zone or a nightmare?
Dear reader, I’ve seen numerous fallacies with our Obamanation, the 100 days chronology was basically 100 days of unconstitutional extracurricular activities possibly climaxing with Air Force One circling Lower Manhattan, frightening thousands of Manhattanites. We know too that this man wants to remake America in His image. A clear vision of ‘fairness’, ‘volunteerism’, ‘redistribution’ of America’s wealth – to it’s rightful owners. As it were, Rome burns, and the Administration spends mountains of debt-financed dollars, foisted upon future unfortunate generations. The debt-financed dollars and their arrogance, stupidity, and duplicity know no bounds.
So today in form our beloved Obamanation comes out with a brilliant plan to actually cut Federal spending by 17 billion dollars! Wow, I channel-surfed through the MSM networks – the talking heads thought that this was such a great idea. “It really shows that He is hearkening” they say. “What we’re trying to do is reorient government activity toward things that work,” said White House Budget Director Peter Orszag. Warm and fuzzy all over! I can’t believe that we have such brilliant folks at the helm today!
And then I read the following – “Even as Obama spoke, a key House panel was adding about $12 billion to his war-spending request.” Uh oh, really? I’m having second thoughts.
And what about this number? This little number that shows that the 17 billion in ‘cuts’ is .5% of the Federal budget? What’s that (blah-blah-blah, Obamanation in the background on the boob-tube), what’s that? Oh I see, it’s not that the .5% reduction is going to affect the deficit, it’s that it shows the peasants that you care. In a flash all comprehension comes to me….
Reason TV ( a great offshoot of Reason.com), recently interviewed Matt Kibbe from the Freedomworks organization. Freedomworks is a great grassroots organization that stands for limited government basics, founded by Rep Dick Armey in 2002 after he resigned his position as majority leader in the house. He’s a great man, how times have changed for the worse in our nation’s political structure. To imagine that Mr Armey was in a leadership spot just a few years ago is shocking. He represents a 100% difference in philosophy for what we have today, Pelosi, Barney, Waxman, and the other members of the Motley Donkey Crue.
Presiden of Freedomworks Kibbe was asked some questions about their group and also the Tea Parties as well.
On the Tea Parties -“I saw an estimate that there were 550, 000 people, I actually think that there was more than that….this was truly a spontaneous grassroots uprising, we were heavily involved in getting it started and getting activists engages but this thing took on a life of it’s own.” “I was in Atlanta with Dick Armey, there was 15 to 20,000 people there, it was amazing I’ve never seen a constituency turn out for freedom like this. ” I think that the (MSM) are genuinely flummoxed that people are showing up so early in the Obamanation administration, saying that we don’t want any more spending. We have suggested that a national march on Washington happen on September 12, there’s a website call 9-12 dc.org, there’s an event on July 4.”
You heard it here, anyone that has a pulse needs to make it to Washington DC to march against socialism. I found the website here. National co-sponsors for this event include the Club for Growth, National Taxpayers Union, Young Americans for Liberty, Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights, and Ron Paul’s Campaign for Liberty. Quite a lineup indeed.
April 20 2009, Carbon Neutral Expeditions sets sail out of Plymouth, Devon. A coastal English city 190 miles south west of London, Devon is a beautiful and picturesque (pictured to the right), bay city. Rife with history circa the Bronze Age., remains of Homo Sapiens dating back to the Upper Palaeolithic (late stone age), have been found estimated to have lived over 10,000 years ago. More recently; (AD 1403 to be exact), the town was burned by Breton Raiders, encouraging an ensuing series of fortifications that were built around the city. The remains of these fortifications exist to this day.
But I apologize for my digressiveness dear reader, back to the original intent of the story – the Carbon Neutral Expeditions voyage. Meet cancer survivor and head of the team Raoul Surcouf and teammate Richard Spink. Flanked by skipper Ben Stoddart, the team set out as stated above on April 20. The purpose of their mission? To prove to the world that they could sail from England to Greenland and back – relying on only sail, solar and man power. Carbon neutral, all aboard the Fleur! A 580 mile voyage under such amazing precocious notions is cause for environmentalist celebration. Mr Surcouf – “The expedition will hopefully show how it is possible to explore some of the most beautiful places on Earth without contributing to their destruction.” Indeed.
So the team sets sail off of the dreamy, fog-laden coast of England. Dreams and fog at the front of this expedition. Many days were ahead, but not to be afraid. This flight of fancy would guide them through Mother Nature’s Grand Design.
Days went by, the carbon-liberated band was growing weary. The day was the 27 of April of our Lord. Mother Nature was throwing fits, a mephitic child , could this be? Oceans tossing and turning, undulating like a giant liquid serpent. The team was holding on – their mission was too important to be controlled by mere fate or weather-natural moodiness. Or was it?
The distress call was heard hundreds of miles away. “The Fleur is surely sinking, water is coming aboard – she is heaving to and fro, God please help!”
And God in all of His wisdom listened to the folly of this distress. Looking down at the tomfoolery and self-inflicted bad circumstance He could still see reconciliation. “What a shame that my people have to carry on such notions, where have they been led?”
And as such circumstance would lead, the Overseas Yellowstone, a gentle lumbering iron giant, packed to the gills with hydrocarbons, perchance was nearby our fated crew. Not exactly peas of a pod, politics and credo has no place in nature’s great watery wilderness, ”Come aboard young fellows!”
And the folly of misguided ethos is laid to rest by the power of God and Mother Nature herself. Or is it?
From the Washington Independent today, a story here showing that Texas Rep. Ron Paul is gaining traction with several enthusiastic converts to his economic theory prowess and defense of Austrian economics. The story points out the interesting fact that Dr. Paul occasionally has lunch with 10 or so members of congress. While dining, the group listens to an author or expert that Paul thinks is notable. These informal and off the record meetings have been host to several speakers on a variety of topics, one of the more interesting is Dr. Thomas Woods, conservative author of the best-selling book “Meltdown,”, a free-market account of what actually led up to the recent economic calamity, pointing out ways in which the New Deal contributed and how the Federal Reserve is responsible for the current economic crisis. Also a senior fellow at the Ludwig von Mises Institute, he is an expert on Austrian theory. Definitely a clarion voice in the fight for liberty.
Which leads me to the next person of notable interest, not a speaker or author but Rep Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. A frequent attendee of Ron Paul’s meetings, and an acolyte free market thinkers, she is the same Rep that was made famous in the blogosphere,(see video below), with her tongue lashing toward Ben Bernanke and Treasure Secretary Geithner . A rising star in the conservative/libertarian wing of the Republican Party, Rep Bachmann represents that which Ron Paul has clamoured for year after year – transparency in the Federal Reserve, a sound dollar policy, and a return to Constitutional economic basics. If you haven’t already done so, you need to sign the “Audit the Fed” petition, (HR 1207), over at the Campaign for Liberty here. Amazingly, this bill now has 124 cosponsors, including some Democrats.
As I said, definitely an acolyte of Ron Paul. American need voices like this in Congress. Simple, concise, Constitutional points. Notice how both Geithner and Bernanke drop the ball on basic Constitutional restraint? Where in the Constitution are there powers are listed?
Leading to the Great One himself. At a congressional hearing yesterday Paul questions Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on a variety of topics, notable points –
“We are in the midst of inflation, just because prices haven’t gone up doesn’t mean that we don’t have the distortion, it was that system that gave us the financial bubble, artificially low interest rates….now we are trying to correct all of that by doing the very same thing.”
“I see this as the real problem, we practice economic planning….socialism always fails because they do not have a pricing structure, interventionism and inflationism fails because we don’t have a free market pricing system of money…..it fails, inevitably it leads to a more socialized economy….” Dr. Paul then goes on to give a defense for HR 1207 and the fact that the books for the Fed need to be open to the public so that the Federal Reserve could perhaps be more transparent and accountable.
From the Politico –
”Former White House press secretary Dana Perino, former Bush counselor Ed Gillespie and former White House deputy press secretary Tony Fratto are among those set to provide words of wisdom to House Republican press secretaries at their annual workshop this Friday.” ”But Democrats are deriding the move to bring in the Bush veterans, calling it proof that the GOP has failed to recognize that Bush’s policies are at least partly to blame for the party’s minority status.”
The story goes on to say that since the GOP in the House are now in the minority, they are focusing on getting their message out, beefing up their communications departments vs procedural. They are now focusing on the microphones vs lawmaking. This is a good thing. The bad part though is as stated above, ”the GOP has failed to recognize that Bush’s policies are at least partly to blame for the party’s minority status.” This is the big one folks, I think that the powers that be in the GOP don’t get it – they don’t understand that they got throttled in 2008 and 2006 not because they weren’t ‘moderate’ enough but entirely because they had become the ‘me too’ wing of the Democrat party and had been spending our tax dollar like drunken sailors (no offense to sailors). Voters here in San Diego were incredibly angry at the GOP! I could practically smell the disgust in the air. San Diego has particularly strong Midwestern values,(surprisingly), and there was an incredible dissatisfaction with the Republican party. That is why the Obamanation carried the county here, a Democrat hasn’t showed well countywide here ever I believe. And yet he won 60% to 40% and it was precisely because enough conservatives stayed home, enough people were convinced that he was the tax-cutter (an abomination that the GOP lost their voice and credibility, even on taxes!). I don’t want to see the Bush era advisers and pols any more, they gave us ‘Big-government Conservatism’, as if there is even such a thing.
Which leads me to the next story, this one involving Mitt Romney. I personally like Mitt Romney, he has a pleasant personality and look for the GOP, I suspect his true conservatism and belief in limited government though. I would have preferred him to McCain. Water under the bridge. Yesterday Romney was on CNN’s State of the Union, (first mistake), and was asked about Sarah Palin being included in Time’s ”World’s Most Influential People.” To which he quipped, “But was that the issue on the most beautiful people or the most influential people?” “I’m not sure. If it’s the most beautiful, I understand. We’re not real cute.” Nice little jab here against conservatives that Palin represents, (not elitists), and that Palin is superficial and not really a leader of the GOP. Of course, the public grass roots folks would hardly agree here, the pols don’t get it. Governor, you’d be best watching your words when it comes to Palin, she has a grass-roots following that rivals Reagan, and she’s a true conservative. Seems like a somewhat innocent little flap on his part, but it does show a certain attitude common amongst the elites.
On to the next story here, this one involving Jeb Bush and a comment he made yesterday during a ‘listening tour’, flanked by Eric Cantor, and Mitt Romney. This ‘listening tour’, a campaign to get the word out to the public, arguing the case for a GOP comeback. Jeb Bush – “From the conservatives, it’s time for us to listen first, to learn a little bit, to upgrade our message a little bit and to not be nostalgic about the past,” you can’t beat something with nothing, and the other side has something. I don’t like it, but they have it, and we have to be respectful and mindful of that.” OK so let’s get this straight here, conservatives need to listen? Listen to what and whom? Do we need to listen to those that believe in dismantling our economic system and possibly take some of their ideas, water them down and then campaign on them? This is what the RINO’s, and elitists would have us do, what does the other side have? They have broad, lofty programs that empower and enable them! It is patently obvious, simple, and should be common sense to the GOP. Argue and fight for American values of rugged individualism and empowerment, free-markets, low taxes and regulations, and a concise vision of these things for America. Any and every time this is tried, the electorate responds.
Republicans trying to find their voice, leaders blaming conservatives as they always will, a media that is all too willing to declare the GOP DOA, through all of this fog I want to point to a man of deep intellect and commitment to conservative ideals and free-markets. A man that we could all look to as the past greatness of conservatism and what we will be in the future. In his passing, rest in peace, Jack French Kemp. You will be missed by America and those that fight for her.
Years ago I decided to try an experiment on the net. I perused several communist/socialist websites to see how closely they resembled today’s Democrat party and/or the Left that controls academia, and the media. I remember trolling on a political message board, (something I don’t do any more – just bomb-throwers involved), and coming across an article that someone had posted. Upon reading the article, I was shocked at how similar most of the points were to what you hear today from the Obamanations, Reids, Pelosis, Michael Moores, Penns, of the world. The source of said article? Communist Party USA.
So this Sunday morning, armed with ample caffeination , (gloomy coastal weather outside being conducive to some net research), I went to several Communist/Socialist websites to pick up points and themes that to my ears sound verbatim to mainstream liberals and progressives.
First stop, the the official site of the Communist Party USA. This one is easy, I don’t even have to go beyond the home page for fodder. Right off the bat I am greeted with a story (leading), expressing to ‘immigrants’ (in spanish no less), the virtues of the celebration of “workers being united May 1.” I know a little spanish so I was able to decipher points , (correct me if my spanish is wrong), such as standing for ”working families”, the need for ”amnesty for workers” workers in ”green industries”, and ”universal health care.” Any of these themes sound familiar dear reader? The communists know that open borders and years of influx of poor and uneducated workers from Mexico have created a political class that could possibly change the political landscape of the US. Poor immigrant workers, legal or otherwise are ripe for the pickings of Leftist organizations.
I scroll down a bit, still on the home-page, and see a story on a documentary called ”At Home in Utopia.” Apparently it is a part of a PBS series detailing communist coops in the Bronx 80 years ago. Taxpayer funded Leftist apologetic garbage from PBS. The NYT sings the praises of this in a glowing article here. The NYT article sounds no different than it’s sister publication above and their article on the CPUSA.org.
The bottom of the page brings me to a special celebration of Earth Day. Evo Morales the President of Bolivia is pointed out as calling on the UN to make Earth Day an official ”Mother Earth Day.” It seems the same Morales that controls the media and the judiciary in his country, and has targeted former presidents, is a greenie and a Marxist.
Quiz – Who authored the following,
“Right now, we can put millions of unemployed people to work doing the essential work of building a green infrastructure: building public transit systems and components, researching and developing sustainable energy sources, insulating and repairing America’s homes and offices, educating the public about environmental practices, and cleaning up our streams, bays, forests and fields.”
Was it –
a) President Barack Obamanation
b) Al Gore
c) Communist Party USA?
d) Sierra Club
Supreme Court Justice Souter, elected to the bench on the High Court by George H W Bush in 1990, yesterday announced his upcoming retirement. During his confirmation process in 1990, Souter was thought of as a strict constitutionalist, and a believer in the original intent of the Constitution. Over the years however Souter proved to be a consistent disappointment to Constitutionalists, expressing opinions and rulings that put him squarely in the camp of those the Justices that believe that the Constititution is ‘flexible.’ Take from this what you will, I believe that the Constitution is not open for debate or judicial review, short of the amendment process – much of the loss of freedoms of the past decades can be traced to judicial activism, Supreme Court included. Recall Kelo v City of London in 2005, where the Court ruled that the city of New London could in fact use eminent domain to take private property and use that property for economic development (ie, broader tax base business development). This case was the most recent example of the Court’s activism, eroding individual American property rights for an ambiguous notion of local tax benefit for higher-tax base businesses and a violation of the 5th Amendment. Justice Souter voted in favor of the city of New London in the Kelo case.
With the above in context, I jumped on the computer in the office this morning, looking to peruse the left-of-center blogs (so you don’t have to) to see what they are saying about Obama’s soon-to-be pick for the Supreme Court. One comment took the cake from everything that I saw.
Huffington Post –
Oliver Willis – “President Obama should appoint an honest-to-goodness liberal to the Supreme Court.” ”Can we get a progressive supreme court justice that will stand up for America’s values on the bench? Yes, we can.”
Mr Willis echoes the sentiments of many in the Left, that Obama will nominate a ‘progressive’ (I’m sure they are right.) What does this mean exactly? What is a ‘progressive’?
From Wikipedia – “American progressives tend to support interventionist economics: they advocate income redistribution , and they oppose the growing influence of corporations.” They are more concerned with envrironmentalism than mainstream liberals, and often support creation of a universal health care system” Among other things I may add.
With the above in mind, enter our current president, a self-proclaimed progressive, soon to offer up a Supreme Court nominee. The Media and Liberals are already offering up several possible candidates here are a few and the ethnic/sex component –
1 – Sonia Sotomayor – Hispanic, Appeals Court Judge, considered a legal liberal
2 – Elena Kagan – served as clerk to liberal justice Marshall, woman
3 – Seth Waxman – commited liberal, won Boumediene v. Bush, upholding habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees
4 – Diane Wood – Chicagoan, Appeals Court Judge, made her name by being the liberal voice on a conservative bench
5 – Harold Koh – Asian, known to support ‘international law’ over the US Constitution, Dean of Yale Law School
6 – Black, Deputy Assistant Attorney General under Clinton, on the board of the liberal American Constituion Society
The principal theme in the MSM is that the Obamanation is going to nominate someone that is black, asian, female or other and certainly progressive. Comprehension and defense of the Constitution not being the overriding factor here. Progressives (even more than most liberals), place a paramount value on racial identity and social justice through income redistribution, something that leadership now is not even afraid to admit. Remember my blog on Chairman Waxman? Mob rule, group identity, subjective ‘redistribution’, vs. implicit limited Constitutional restraint.
