LA JOLLA — GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney, scheduled to attend a series of fundraisers this weekend in San Diego, is also working on plans to nearly quadruple the size of his $12 million oceanfront manse in La Jolla.

Romney has filed an application with the city to bulldoze his 3,009-square-foot, single-story home at 311 Dunemere Dr. and replace it with a two-story, 11,062-square-foot structure.

Joining John Edwards and Al Gore in the "I don't think my current house is big enough" category, Mitt Romney plans a little ill timed remodeling. No, that's not exactly right. Remodeling is when you change or add to a place. Bulldozing it and replacing it with a structure four times larger is more than "remodeling".

Mr. Romney is free to do whatever he wants to with his money. I don't have a problem with that. At a time when people are losing the modest homes they have, building a mega mansion on the beach doesn't exactly scream, "I feel your pain".

It's just one more way in which Romney looks like Obama Lite. It cannot be good for his campaign.

Update : For those who do not remember the 2008 campaign, here's an ad Obama ran against John McCain.

  1. Building a house with your own money "looks like Obama lite"? With all due respect, that is fucking retarded. Reaching much? Geez.

  2. Well, you know, it's not easy keeping up with the other Establishment kids.

"Because the Only Good Progressive is a Failed Progressive"

  3. He's using his own money. He's employing people to build his house. He has five kids and 15 grandchildren that I'm sure all love to vacation or spend holidays together. I don't see a problem.

  4. My guess is Romney is not your candidate. The comparison to Edwards and Gore, is totally ridiculous but it did get my attention.

The difference between Romney and Obama is this, Obama thinks you should sacrifice what you don't have (blood from a turnip) to help him clean up Bush's mess, while he campaigns/vacations on your dime. Romney believes he can help us get out of this mess and allow you the chance to be just as successful as he has been.

  5. At least he's creating real jobs that add wealth. More than I can say for Obama.
You're right about the reaction. But we shouldn't emulate leftist tweeters that I am already seeing hit on this issue.

  6. Chuck: Sorry you can't see that Romney is opening himself up to the same kind of class warfare that the Vacationer-in-Chief is courting. It's not just "building a house". He's tearing down a three thousand sq. ft. beachfront house to build an eleven thousand sq. ft. beach house.

It makes him look elitist. Add that to Romney care and you get Obama Lite. What might be "retarded is your inability to connect the dots. But, thanks for playing!

  7. "The comparison to Edwards and Gore, is totally ridiculous" You don't remember Edwards building a ten thousand plus sq ft. megamansion in North Carolina?
Or Al Gore's new California property? You may be right. Al Gore's nine million dollar California manse is only 6,500 sq. ft.

    Yeah. TOTALLY ridiculous!

  8. Wow, successful businessmen who can afford not to work and to run for political office without salary can afford such large houses?

    Color me surprised!

Now, if that same candidate were preaching in favor of reducing ones environmental footprint or for greater redistribution of income, that would be hypocritical.

  9. Nick: I never said he was being hypocritical, although that would fit green weenie Gore or "Two Americas" Edwards. Overly ostentatious, perhaps, but not hypocritical. Given the Democrats' penchant for class warfare, I see no need to play into their hands, though.

  10. Mitt also gives millions away to charity.

  11. Well Proof. I see your point... But of course I don't care much for Romeny anyway...
