Newt Gingrich Outpacing others Hopefuls in 2012 GOP Field?

by the Left Coast Rebel

Via. Memeorandum, Politico:

Newt Gingrich’s political groups raised more than $4.2 million in the last three months of 2010, bringing the former House speaker’s total to $14.5 million for the year – a sum that far eclipses his potential rivals for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Gingrich, who has increasingly signaled his desire to enter the race to take on President Barack Obama, raised more last year than the three next most prolific fundraisers eying Republican presidential bids combined – former Govs. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts (whose political committees brought in $6.3 million in 2010), Sarah Palin of Alaska ($3.5 million) and Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota ($2.6 million).

Read the rest. Now I'm sure that most of you are with me in that Gingrich is an awful choice for the GOP 2012 presidential ticket. Too liberal, too insider and untrustworthy. Ded Scozzafava, anyone? Do conservatives even remember this:

Gingrich's personal baggage, past transgressions against the limited government cause and general position as a political re-tread all contribute to his undesirability, in my opinion.

News on his impressive fund-raising just points to how weak the entire GOP field is...outside of a few long-shots, like Godfather Pizza founder Herman Cain (love the guy) and libertarian, former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson (love the guy, too), limited government advocates don't really have someone to stand by or get excited about.

Do not let the Republican party saddle us with another McCain/Dole clone!

  1. I don't know who Cain is, so I'll go find out, but I can tell you that Republicans are just dumb enough to nominate Gingrich, Palin or Romney. And if so Obama can probably look forward to four more years.

As usual, the country gets the leadership it deserves.

  2. I have found an interesting problem with Mr. Cain.

He supports Newt Gingrich for President.

  3. I would rather waste my vote on Palin than vote for Newt!
Haven't heard much about Cain lately.. what's he doing?

  4. Grant - Send me any info you have on that and I'll take a look at it. I have been very impressed with Cain on Judge Napolitano's show but don't know everything about him...the Koch brothers may be putting some muscle behind him too...

    To be continued

  5. I DO NOT like Newt. He's old school and musty smelling. Not a leader for our country. Let's keep looking. There has got to be better than N. Gringrich. We are wasting our votes with this used up wanna be. He would be the final death peg for the Republicans.

  6. LCR: You know I am a Democrat, so I will have little to say in the GOP primary (the bonus is, however, I get to vote against Obama TWICE in 2012). That being said, you can imagine I am not a great big fan of Newt G. However, he actually did accomplish a lot in 1994 and at least is willing to rip-off sensible Tea Party innovations.

Please, my GOP friends, do not give me Huckabee. It is the one candidate I see on the horizon that will compel me to look for third party alternatives.

The only ones I see in the GOP field that excite me even a little are Sarah Palin (the only one willing to challenge the Once directly without mincing words), Mitch Daniels (decertified the public employee unions on his first day as Governor) and Rudy Guiliani. I wish Jan Brewer would toss her hat into the ring.

  7. My statement about Cain backing Newt is based on his own words at the end of a video I found on his site by following your link above. (Draft Herman Cain 2012)

You can watch the video at
to avoid a lot of clicks.

He seems like a rational observer of the political scene but I'm having trouble visualizing a path to the Presidency for a relatively obscure radio host who hasn't even decided to go for it. He has nice credentials, but only compared to the current occupant of the White House.
