Obama's Winter White House an Illegal Rental

If I'd wanted an illegal rental, I could have asked Tony Rezko!

President Barack Obama's two-week stay at his Hawaii Winter White House was illegal under a long-standing Honolulu ban on short-term rentals.

Obama did not break the law by staying at the house, but the property owner who rented his house to the Obamas does not have the permit that would allow a stay of fewer than 30 days.

You'd think someone with as much juice as the President could have somebody find out and comply with a few simple real estate ordinances! Since he's been vacationing there since 2008, and although his vacations are frequent, they haven't been 30 days long (yet), the other rentals must have been illegal, too?

Maybe the landlord can finagle a presidential pardon?

  1. Oh boy! No freakin' way. It seems like pretty much everything Obama engages in is either illegal or unconstitutional so this isn't too surprising for me to believe.

  2. You know, even if he were completely innocent in this, you'd think that someone on staff would know to ask the right questions, to keep him away from the implication of any improprieties.

Plus, there were Secret service and other staff renting places, none of which were spending 30 days. You'd think one of them might have noticed. Or were all the other rentals illegal as well?

  3. Interesting that by following the link provided, it seems this is a fairly common problem in Hawaii, and given the line "However his is a common misconception about Honolulu law." it's not too large of an assumption to say that this is a matter of simply being uninformed.

Considering the punishment is a mere $1000 fine, I don't think this is a problem--it barely ranks as a nuisance.

Teresa's uninformed comment, however, is a more brazen example of the tone and implications this type of post is trying to raise in the "Anti-Obama" narrative.
