More on the Nannygate/Whitman Controversy at Pajamas Media

by the Left Coast Rebel

I apologize for the sparse content from yours truly today, I was up late last night and early this morning writing another Pajamas Media piece. This article was a bit different for me as it was done essentially on-the-fly and covers a breaking news story. Here's an excerpt:

As Ed Driscoll pointed us to the “Obi-Won Kenobi” of campaign predictors, this October surprise has been an expected wild card in the California electoral playbook. Political geeks in the audience will recall that a similar Nannygate flap killed candidate Michael Huffington’s 1996 California senate run. Yes that Huffington, in case you didn’t know. Likewise, Bush appointees Linda Chavez and Bernie Kerik were both felled by the Nannygate-sword.

To cross the hypothetical bridge to nowhere in Whitman’s Nannygate we are offered inch-thick, mile-wide evidence, anecdotal, tabloid, and otherwise.

Highlights:

1). Show me the papers! Yesterday Meg Whitman offered that she had no idea that her maid was an illegal immigrant and that a valid Social Security card was presented from Santillan’s hiring agency. Attorney Gloria Allred countered this, claiming that the Social Security Administration sent a letter to the Whitman household in 2003 red-flagging Santillan’s Social Security number. This is key to this case. Whitman says she never got it and has put that ball back in Allred’s court. Will Allred produce this letter? Or will she dangle it up high above election heads and then drop it, say, Halloween day? Boo! If Allred produces it, the fickle finger of blame gets pointed right back at her and the nanny: How did they get it? Did the nanny add mail theft to immigration law violations?

2).
Hell hath no fury like the ego of a woman desperately seeking the spotlight. Gloria Allred has a colorful history of pulling last minute, ego-stroking stunts like this. Allred attempted to derail Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2003 recall election by drumming up sexual harassment charges and a lawsuit from a Hollywood stuntwoman named Rhonda Miller. Miller claimed that Schwarzenegger “pulled up her shirt” and “suckled her breasts” on the Terminator 2 set. She also alleged that Schwarzenegger fondled her during the filming of True Lies. Despite the salacious allegations, Rhonda Miller’s suit was later dismissed. For more on this listen to Hugh Hewitt’s interview with Allred yesterday.

Updated: I neglected to mention the Mad Men Passion Index that just came out on Meg Whitman. Read it here.

  1. I wonder if Gloria Allred has overplayed her hand on this one? Seems to me that she has put her client in jeopardy of extradition by getting her to publicly admit that she is violation of Federal Immigration Law.

Does anyone else here see a potential serious violation of California's attorney ethics code here?

  2. I don't think this is going to have any impact. I am voting for Whitman regardless, and I think most people who are voting for her would feel the same way.

Even if it's true, I feel like Whitman still comes off as decent. She could have turned the woman in and had her deported, but she didn't. I wouldn't have, either. I bet she's wishing she would have, now that the little witch has turned on her.

  3. LCR: Thanks for the link.

MissTammy: I disagree -- I think there will be such a backlash against this tactic that MORE people will end up voting for her. In fact, 3 on-the-fence types solidified their vote for Meg last night.

  4. I am hoping that Mutnodjmet is right. At least that;s what I am praying for. It's such a patently craven trick. It has to make the Dems look bad!

  5. Mutnodjmet, I think you're right about that; it didn't even occur to me! I was just thinking in terms of people who were supporting her to begin with.

It does reek of smear tactics at opportune moments, which puts people off.

And the latest allegation regarding the letter that has her husband's writing...well, let me tell ya, as a wife who loves her husband with every fiber of her being, I can totally see him doing this.

Hand it off to the young lady so she can take care of it, thinking she just wrote the number wrong or something, and then forget to follow up, or just assume she took care of it. Yep, I can see that.

And so will most married women who are honest with themselves! LOL!

  6. Great interview with Allred, she just refuses to acknowledge that her client lied! She's totally flippant and dismissive of the fact the court threw out her prior case. Poor illegal nanny was underpaid and overworked, well then, she should have returned to her home in Mexico. Seems she didn't have it so bad, she stayed here in Cali. Allred is a total joke, she's not a legit lawyer, she is a hollywood tabloid!
