Obama's Response to the BP Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico Similar to Bush/Katrina? (LOUISIANA 2010 OIL SPILL PICTURES)

by the Left Coast Rebel

Is the Gulf/Louisiana BP oil spill/disaster Obama's Katrina? I certainly think the analogy is more than fair. Consider this - Obama officials sat on information re: the gulf oil rig explosing/ensuing spill until it was too late to act and Napolitano didn't even know that the DOD was capable of helping in the effort. Via Memeorandum, imagine that this is coming from the NYT, "BP is Criticized over Oil Spill but U.S. Missed Chances to Act":

As oil edged toward the Louisiana coast and fears continued to grow that the leak from a seabed oil well could spiral out of control, officials in the Obama administration publicly chastised BP America for its handling of the spreading oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico, where Obama is expected to travel this weekend.

Yet a review of the response suggests it may be too simplistic to place all the blame for the unfolding environmental catastrophe on the oil company. The federal government also had opportunities to move more quickly, but did not do so while it waited for a resolution to the spreading spill from BP.

The Department of Homeland Security waited until Thursday to declare that the incident was “a spill of national significance,” and then set up a second command center in Mobile, Ala. The actions came only after the estimate of the size of the spill was increased fivefold to 5,000 barrels a day.

The delay meant that the Homeland Security Department waited until late this week to formally request a more robust response from the Department of Defense, with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano acknowledging even as late as Thursday afternoon that she did not know if the Defense Department even had equipment that might be helpful.

By Friday afternoon, she said, the Defense Department had agreed to send two large military transport planes to spray chemicals that can disperse the oil while it is still in the Gulf.

I haven't spoken out on this topic and/or covered the BP oil rig explosion/spill but knowing the above, I can put much of the responsibility and culpability on the shoulders of Obama. Do you think the press will connect the dots and lay at least some of the blame where it belongs? What if a conservative administration (or even right of center in any way, shape or form) had 'sat' on information and failed to act, thereby in the least addding to the disaster's scope? Goes without saying.

UPDATED: I found incredible photos/pictures of the Louisiana/BP oil spill at the Boston Globe. Once again, c/o Boston Globe/AP, not used for commercial purposes here. First we have an aerial photo taken of the Deepwater Horizon burning on Wednesday, April 21, 2010:

  1. LCR- I agree completely that this was a huge miss by BO's morons. I cannot expect BO to know how to respond, but you would think someone would have known that this was going to be bad. I guarantee that all the blame for the ecological disaster gets put on BP and not BO , which is a shame. By now, I guess we should be use to it.

  2. LCR, culled from The King's Jester Blog, is this delicious comment from Laura in Maryland:

“This ever widening black mass could reach the Mississippi, Alabama and Florida coasts by Monday.”

So…you’re saying FLOTUS is touring the spill site too?

By the way, I like the new trend in your posts (at least new to me) of posting incredibly intense pictures. Although they are disasters, the oil spill and volcano pics are terrific.

  3. Good article and excellent point. I was wondering if "they" might want to blame Prez Bush on this one? Well, I'm still saying it could have been sabatoge. There are so many safety features on these rigs and the people train constantly for safety. It's not above the Far Left to do to murder to achieve their own evil goals.

  4. This incident out to drive a nail in the coffin of offshore oil drilling.
All that talk by oil execs and "drill, baby, drll" proponents that "modern technology" has made oil deep water exploration "much safer" than it was 20 years ago were just that...talk.
Too bad it takes a man made disaster like this one to convince the public that oil drilling is NOT safe.
