Beck While Not Smearing Malia Obama Was Infantile

Glenn Beck, conservative television and radio show host,  showed his lack of sensitivity when he used President Obama's daughter Malia as a prop (if you will) to jab the president over the BP oil spill.

It is all good and well to be critical of this president for his performance or lack thereof with respect to this issue. It is fine to hit the president hard if one wishes. Even James Carville, one of the lefts biggest loudmouths trashed the president on public TV for his handling of the disaster.

Perhaps, as some are saying the disaster in the gulf may very well be Obama's Katrina. If it becomes a political liability it can be argued that it is deserved. However, this is not the point of this post and I have digressed.

Beck was wrong, flat wrong in using Malia to make fun of the President. The President's children, should be off limits period. The use of children in any way shape or form to make a political statements, or as in this case a prop, is lacking any class and frankly borders on being crass.

Beck who often is spot on with his political commentary and historical perspective, won no points on this one. If anything he simply gave the left a valid point on which to hammer him with. It is proper that Mr. Beck offered his apology for a foolish and childish radio spot. Let's hope he learns something with this one.

Here is the audio of the segment that shouldn't have been.

The Transcript:

BECK: (imitating Malia) Daddy? Daddy? Daddy, did you plug the hole yet? Daddy?
PAT GRAY (co-host): (imitating Obama) No I didn't, honey.
BECK: (imitating Malia) Daddy, I know you're better than [unintelligible]
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Mm-hmm, big country.
BECK: (imitating Malia) And I was wondering if you've plugged that hole yet.
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Honey, not yet.
BECK: (imitating Malia) Why not, daddy? But daddy--
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Not time yet, honey. Hasn't done enough damage.
BECK: (imitating Malia) Daddy?
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Not enough damage yet, honey.
BECK: (imitating Malia) Daddy?
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Yeah?
BECK: (imitating Malia) Why do you hate black people so much?
GRAY: (imitating Obama) I'm part white, honey.
BECK: (imitating Malia) What?
GRAY: (imitating Obama) What?
BECK: (imitating Malia) What'd you say?
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Excuse me?
BECK: (laughing) This is such a ridiculous -- this is such a ridiculous thing that his daughter-- (imitating Malia) Daddy?
GRAY: It's so stupid.
BECK: How old is his daughter? Like, thirteen?
GRAY: Well, one of them's, I think, thirteen, one's eleven, or something.
BECK: "Did you plug the hole yet, daddy?" Is that's their -- that's the level of their education, that they're coming to -- they're coming to daddy and saying 'Daddy, did you plug the hole yet?' " Plug the hole!
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Yes, I was doing some deep-sea diving yesterday, and--
BECK: (imitating Malia) Daddy?
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Yeah, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, I was doing--

BECK: (imitating Malia) Why--
GRAY: (imitating Obama) Yeah, honey, I'm--
BECK (imitating Malia) Why, why, why, why, do you still let the polar bears die? Daddy, why do you still let Sarah Palin destroy the environment? Why are -- Daddy, why don't you just put her in some sort of a camp?
And now the apology:

In discussing how President Obama uses children to shield himself from criticism, I broke my own rule about leaving kids out of political debates. The children of public figures should be left on the sidelines. It was a stupid mistake and I apologize--and as a dad I should have known better.

Hopefully Beck is sincere in his apology. It is stunts such as this one that give rise, and justifiably so, to the generally groundless allegations that conservatives are wackos.

  1. Glenn Beck lost me a long time ago. With his Weepy the Clown act, his support for Rick Perry and his high drama, how can anyone take him seriously?

  2. If Obama was not using his own child as a prop, I would agree hole heartedly.

  4. ugh, don't use the media matters snipit out of context transcript! the show was about mocking obama, not malia. he was making fun of obama for pulling a jimmy carter/amy carter nuclear weapons moment. he was riffing on the fake story obama tried to sell us - it was all about mocking obama.

sorry, but media matters is so full of it. i am glad beck apologized for even mentioning her, but obama shouldn't have lamely brought her into the presser.

i refuse to give haters like Media Matters the satisfaction of supporting and spreading their out of context smear job.

it's pathetic faux outrage coming from people who attack and condone the hate directed at the palin kids.

beck was not attacking malia. (sorry, this just really ticks me off, after all the things that have been said about the palin family.)

  6. I am not speaking to Glenn's intent. The point I am I am really making here is that no one should use children as political pawns or "props" for any reason. Period.

The secondary point is Beck did nothing to enhance his stature. As a libertarian leaning conservative I simply stand on the principal that it was and is wrong to use children.

When a politician uses his or her own children my position is the same. But I ain't about helping progressive/socialist/statist understand this.

But I sure as hell want spokesmen of the conservative libertarian cause like Beck, Hannity, Palin et all to understand.

    Just my two cents worth.

  7. I'm With american girl. I am tired of being concerned for the sensibilities of the enemy. I have no concern for Obama's children, just like he has none for mine. And I have no doubt he will exploit them to hell and back if it serves his purposes. Beck, histrionics aside, does a damn good job getting needed info out.

  9. After hearing the recording I felt compelled to delete the previous post. I think it was absolutely hilarious! Where is the attack of the daughter?
I did hear the bit where Obama used his child as a prop and it just shows his contempt for us as American citizens. What an insult.

  10. I agree- It was Obama himself that used his daughter as a prop. Not Beck. He was making fun of Obama's fake story about his own daughter.

  11. A summary as I see it.

Obama used the kid as a propaganda prop, so his platform to complain and the platforms for anybody to complain are destroyed. End of that story.

But everything Gray and Beck did are beyond ugly. And as near as I can tell there was four hours of it. (I can't tell now because the recordings have been progressived off Beck's web site.)

A commentary on The Won's use of the kid as a prop and the inane words he puts in her mouth (I would like to see evidence that she is actually the stupid--nothing else I know about her suggests that) would be in order, even at great length.

This was the second time this week that Beck allowed (or augmented) Gray's destruction of the program. The first one was when Beck (and later Burguiere) tried to (correctly) take the position that the Constitution provides no method to prevent the Moslems from building their facility near the WTC, and further to take the position that it is wrong to search the state and city laws for some obscure tenet that would bar the construction.

That he sometimes gets tear in hard-to-understand situations I attribute to one of the several problems he has admitted-to (I regard that in the same way as I regard stutterers, and marvel at the strength it takes to get through the handicap).

But these two incidents were unforced errors and he has hurt himself badly.

I've sent email (that seems to have disappeared in the same black holes earlier, happier missives have) on these subjects.

    I don't even get crickets.

I don't intend to renew my "insider Extreme" subscription for this and some other reasons.

I continue (with some trepidation) to watch his TV program when I can find it on-line.

    It is really sad.

  12. Hmmmm...
I thought it was funny (but then, I think everything is funny), and accurate.

The thing that bothers me when people (from any political persuasion) being decrying the method of delivery of a message is that nobody seems interested in examining whether or not the content was accurate or not.

I listened to the "routine" and have read through it a number of times, and I can't seem to interpret it as an attack on the little girl.
Even if I do, for the sake of argument, take that stance, it seems so mild that I honestly wonder what the hullabaloo is all about.

I hope we don't fall into the typical lib trap of focusing on the superficial and overlooking the content. Every conservative in the country could be all smiles and warm fuzzies all the time, and the left would still attack with the venom and insanity that we have become so accustomed to. I think we're way past the point at which we have the luxury of worrying about image. What we need is clear expressions of truth, no matter how sharp or politically incorrect.

  13. Beck went over the edge, but it was Obama that made his own daughter a prop. When he brings her into it, she's fair game.

First of all, I don't believe Obama's story for one second. He has already revealed his poker tell: he stutters every time he lies.

He lied about the woman wanting to be buried in an Obama t-shirt. He lied about not referring to Sarah Palin with his lipstick comment.

He makes this crap up as he goes along.

Beck has been doing some wonderful work on his television show, talking about our Founding Fathers and the Black Patriots.

We might as well destroy Sasha and Malia now because they're going to be running for office some day. Obama's reputation needs to be reduced to charred flesh by the time he leaves office or he'll become a living legend.

And how did liberals treat Bush's daughters? Sauce for the goose.

  14. The point here is this... Under no circumstances is it ethical, acceptable, okay, or cute to use children for political gain or advantage.

If this ethical standard renders me UNWORTHY OF BEING A CONSERVATIVE LIBERTARIAN SO BE IT.

Principals matter, and conservatives have used principal to beat on the left when expedient to do so. So live the talk and denounce it from wherever it comes. Lest we be hypocrites.

The American people of the left are not the enemy. The ideology they have been indoctrinated with compliments of the Department of Education and politicians educated in the "mold" is. So fight the source, not the symptoms.

Just the opinion of one, the Individual.
