Qatar Diplomat Mohammed al Modadi, Shoe-Bomber that (Fortunately) Wasn't UPDATED: Photo of Mohammed al Modadi

by the Left Coast Rebel

I just checked into Memeorandum to see one hell of an ABC News headline - Air Marshalls Stop Alleged 'Shoe Bomb' Attempt on Jet to Denver. But going from this headline to the actual link made me wonder what the heck I missed:

FBI agents say no explosives were found in the shoes of a Qatar diplomat who was subdued by federal air marshals on a United flight to Denver Wednesday night after allegedly telling the marshals, "I'm lighting my shoes on fire."

Authorities say the diplomat was wrestled to the ground and two F-16 fighter jets were dispatched to accompany the 757 on the final five minutes of its flight to Denver. Flight 663 originated from Washington Reagan airport.

A US security official said, "it may have been a massive misunderstanding" and the diplomat's statement may have been a "sarcastic" comment when he was confronted by two air marshals who had been told by flight attendants that smoke was coming from the lavatory.

Law enforcement authorities in Denver say the air marshals and the diplomat were in a "physical confrontation."

The suspect was identified by authorities as a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, Mohammed al Modadi, 27. The FBI said the man had full diplomatic immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul.

The plane was taken to a remote location after landing at Denver and passengers were questioned by FBI agents about the incident. A bomb squad team and explosives-sniffing dogs were still on board the plane late Wednesday night.

Authorities said White House officials had been briefed on the incident as it unfolded.

So am I to take from this that this Mohammed al Modadi thought it would be a real 'hoot' to tell marshals that he was 'lighting his shoes on fire?' Clifton Bazar at Another Black Conservative has more, it seems that Mohammed al Modadi was smoking in the boys room too!:

The jerk was smoking in the bathroom and when he got caught decided to be sarcastic. Oh that was so funny I forgot to laugh. This guy is a complete idiot. Why on earth would he have thought that “joke” would have been funny? Who wants to bet that a. he is immune from charges, b. he tries to sue?
Knowing this, this Mohammed 'sarcastic shoe bomber' should be facing massive fines and prosecution, right? Nope. The AP is reporting that no charges will be brought against Mohammed al Modadi:

DENVER — A law enforcement official says there will be no criminal charges against a Qatari diplomat who sparked a bomb scare Wednesday night by trying to sneak a smoke in a bathroom on a commercial flight from Washington to Denver.

The official wasn't authorized to discuss details of the case and therefore spoke on condition of anonymity.

Can you imagine if you or I had done this instead of a well connected Qatar diplomat? Heck, for smoking alone you or I would be thrown into a Federal penitentiary. Throw in the 'sarcastic shoe bomb' comment and I can guarantee that anyone would be facing a world of hurt. I say that U.S. taxpayers should send the bill for scrambling the F-16 fighters and wasting everyone's time should be sent Express Mail to Qatar. And if they refuse to pay it, deny access into the U.S. for anyone from that country.

UPDATED: Via a link at the Jawa Report I have a photo of the 'sarcastic shoe bomber' Mohammed al Modadi. Mohammed al Modadi is the guy on the right:

douche fake shoe bomber

UPDATED x2: I grabbed this from the Department of Defense regarding the F-16s that intercepted the flight:

American Forces Press Service

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo., April 7, 2010 – Two F-16 fighters under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command intercepted a Denver-bound airliner at about 6:45 p.m. MDT today.

Shortly before the airliner was scheduled to land in Denver from Washington National Airport, a passenger reportedly caused a disturbance, NORAD officials said.

The F-16s intercepted and escorted the aircraft, which landed safely. Local law enforcement officials met the plane in Denver.

UPDATED x3: New LCR reader Wes M. (and fellow Californian) has a great take on this at In My Copious Free Time on the 'sarcastic shoe bomber' that wasn't incident. What can we do, if not laugh, right?
