Did anyone note the Beck segment today where he interviewed Stossel?
Well he went to a funny segment where Stossel was riding a golf cart in NYC, claiming that he had received it for free, via a Federal tax subsidy. So I did a little digging and found some details. It's anything but funny if you are a taxpayer. The Wall Street Journal being my first stop. Almost two months ago they were privy to this story, a piece called Cash for Clubbers that goes into detail on the free golf carts from the Feds story:
Thanks to the federal tax credit to buy high-mileage cars that was part of President Obama's stimulus plan, Uncle Sam is now paying Americans to buy that great necessity of modern life, the golf cart. No, it is not the 'coolest' thing I have ever heard of, it is the latest, most ridiculous fleecing and raping of the U.S. taxpayer that I have ever heard of. A sheer abomination from the Obamanation. Tonight the new Stossel show will go more in depth on this story. From what I am reading here the show will have a great segment where Stossel goes to Arizona and purchases a 'free' golf cart. Tune in, I will be. I'll have the segment up here at LCR when it becomes available too.The federal credit provides from $4,200 to $5,500 for the purchase of an electric vehicle, and when it is combined with similar incentive plans in many states the tax credits can pay for nearly the entire cost of a golf cart. Even in states that don't have their own tax rebate plans, the federal credit is generous enough to pay for half or even two-thirds of the average sticker price of a cart, which is typically in the range of $8,000 to $10,000. "The purchase of some models could be absolutely free," Roger Gaddis of Ada Electric Cars in Oklahoma said earlier this year. "Is that about the coolest thing you've ever heard?"

Actually, "vehicles manufactured for use on a golf course do not qualify". Just ask a tax pro like me (see page 2)
I love Glen Beck more every day.
@ Larry - Thanks for the link, I read it and agree, I wonder how this was turned around to allow for these golf carts to be bought and sold? Interesting...
@ Chuck - Me too!
There are those like freeelectriccar.com who are taking advantage of this erroneous story and selling golf carts to unaware people. Come tax rebate time and the IRS denies the rebate because golf carts do not qualify this guy will vanish into the woodwork. Another scam in the making.
I called and talked to a local golf cart dealer and he said he would sell me the cart but said it does not qualify for the tax rebate. Let the buyer beware!
Zone Electric Car, LLC has received certification for these vehicle models from the US Department of the Treasury for a Federal Tax Credit of $6,496.53.
That is what is posted on the freeelectriccar.com site. Maybe I was wrong and this one car can receive tax rebates. I wouldn't want to accuse them of something that I can not prove or disprove. Check with your CPA would be my advice before you buy any electric car and expect a tax rebate.
