The payoff, isn't that what politics is all about? You vote for my bill and I'll vote for yours. It's just a little tit-for tat buddy.
Well that's what happened last night with freshman Rep Joseph Cao (R-La) on the vote for Pelosicare. According to the lone Republican to vote for the bill, he was promised by the, Chosen One himself, that more help would be forthcoming for his Katrina ravaged district if he voted Yes on the bill.
“Today, I obtained a commitment from President Obama that he and I will work together to address the critical health care issues of Louisiana including the FMAP crisis and community disaster loan forgiveness, as well as issues related to Charity and Methodist Hospitals”
Now, one can hardly fault Cao for voting his conscience but to do it after a promise to help his district, which has already received billions to rebuild after Katrina, and in the way he did it, according to The Hill is unconscionable.
Once the tally board lit up 218-213, however, Cao was free to put his congressional voting card in electronic key slot and cast an “aye” vote for the bill his party has dubbed “Pelosi’s healthcare bill.”
He did it quickly, and quietly, while the rest of the chamber was applauding for having cleared the vote threshold needed for passage, the vulnerable Republican was recorded as voting for the sweeping $1.2 trillion measure.
This is what is wrong with politics and politicians today. In order to curry favor in his highly Democratic district, Cao waits until after the bill has enough votes to pass and then symbolically votes Yes in order to please his constituents. If this bill was something that he truly believed in he should have had the intestinal fortitude to cast his vote prior to passage without concern for what his fellow party members' opinion was.
We need to end politics as usual in DC and elect politicians that will vote for what is right and not what is right for them politically. And if they don't, they need to be called out for it.

Nice hair-
ReplyDeleteIs this guy into Elvis or something?
At least he ran "Cold Cash" Jefferson out of town, anyway-
We pick up the tab for their tit-for tat.
ReplyDeleteGood God, does he have any inkling? Katrina will eventually survive. The country will never survive this HC bill. He's not long for politics if he doesn't pick his battles carefully in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteThanks for all the support.
@ RRR - Indeed, you and I here are the only ones that even know what 'cold cash' Jefferson was all about. To think, I only have fish and icecubes in my freezer, lol.
ReplyDelete@ RK - Exactly.
@ Elizabeth - I agree, Katrian is nothing compared to socialism into perpetuity.
@ Chris - My best, you are welcome.
