I don't think you understand the pure amount of inspiration and pride the people in your posted videos have about having a president who looks like them in the office. Though we've come a long way re: civil rights in this country, there are some (read: lousianna) that still won't marry inter-racial couples. We can not erase the 400 something years of social, political, and economic oppression racism has caused. When these kids see our president, they feel a bit more empowered. Just how Jackie Robinson made minority children aspire towards careers in the Majors, Obama inspires kids to greater things as well. These signs of affection really shouldn't be construed as anything but that. 5th graders are just about incapable of grasping any kind of political meaning in any of this stuff.
ReplyDeleteBTW, i'd like to go to a tea party... can you point me in the direction of tea parties on long island?
ReplyDeleteLaw, your comments really concerns me. A President that LOOKS like them? What does that mean? I find that comment racist to the core. Feel more Empowered? Why didn't Clearance Thomas, Colin Powell or Condi Rice? Oh, they were Conservative Blacks, sorry. Bush looked like me and didn't inspire me at all. In fact, the man scared me and for good reasons. Clinton looked like me and the man completely embarassed me with his abuse of power to exploit young women for sex not to mention the many suspcious deaths and terrible policies, especially in the Middle East, that surrounded them. No inspiration there. Reagan inspired me because the man believed in the American people, individualism, and the value of hard work, not on government handouts. Not because of the color of his skin. The man had a history of accomplishments supporting conservative ideals and faith in the individual. What does Obama exactly inspire? What has the man accomplish other than he can read from a teleprompter exceptionally well and got elected President because he wasn't George Bush (as McShame would had been Bush III)? Jackie Robinson accomplished some great baseball feats and fought racism. Even Reagan had the graciousness mainly not to read from a prompter and he at least he wrote his own speeches and spoke from the heart about people rising themselves up. This President accomplished nothing, inspires nothing but fear, hate, and bigotry against White America (see his books for how bad). Yes, you're right about 400 years of oppression, and LA is mainly a Black state run by black and other minority politicians so if interracial marriage is still banned, take a look at why. Perhaps it's racism but not the one you're thinking but instead of moving forward, people inspired because this president "looks" like them shows they're not progessing but heading backwards. After all, you can't disagree with the President without being called a racist or bigot. So much for listening to those that disagree. If that's what inspires them, then racism just took a huge step forward sending us back 400 years. Just because it's a black man doing the bigotry (well, half black, but who's noticing?) doesn't make it any better.
ReplyDeleteRacist? You are terribly mistaken. As a Black American who was lucky to get out of the city when I was young, go to a good suburban school that provided me rich opportunities that included international travel, which resulted in my graduating from 2 prestigious universities, I remind myself often of how lucky I really am. I know people who are very close to me who live in poverty stricken areas in urban America who are filled with hopelessness. They feel that white people are the bad guys who do nothing but keep them in their place. And while you may not be the offender, you have to recognize that a culture of oppression has existed in this country from the very day Black people stepped foot on this continent to about maybe 1969. If you think 40 years of racial tolerance under the law can erase centuries of oppression and mistrust, you are woefully mistaken. Minority children from under privileged areas don't have many role models to look up to. Especially one who is the president.
ReplyDeleteAnd Reagan doesn't write his own speeches. EVERY president has a speech writer. I believe MSNBC's Chris Mathews was one of his speech writers in fact. Irony huh? President Obama did in fact compose "A More Perfect Union."
"Black state run by black and other minority politicians so if interracial marriage is still banned, take a look at why." FYI, denied by a white judge... (banning inter-racial marriages is illegal).
And while Pres. Bush and Clinton may not inspired you, there are scores of white people that have. Me as well. Can you name how many black people own a movie studio? Only one, Tyler Perry. So, friend, this has nothing to do about regression, it is quite the opposite. There are new benchmarks of progression, and this is what these children celebrate. If you are unable to step outside of yourself and see this from another vantage point, then perhaps, you'll never understand.
BTW, Clarence thomas is before my time, but I'm sure he has insipred leagues of Black lawyers and judges. I know that Colin Powell is an inspiration to many minorities in the military as well, as I have many friends aspiring to become high ranking offiers in the military. Condi Rice is not only an inspiration to minorities, but also an inspiration to women, as she was, until Pelosi became speaker of the house, the most powerful woman in the country. It would be prudent to do a little investigation and inquiry before making unsubstantiated statements...
ReplyDelete@ The Law - Thanks for the comment. I respect your opinion here and you personally too, you know that. So I was thinking about this topic, schoolchildren praising a leader, being instructed to. One quick question on this note.
ReplyDeleteSimply where would you draw the line with children and a political commandeered by children?
I think that this point is far beyond that line and if it were a liberal or cons pres would matter not.
Well LCR, you had a piece a couple of months ago about a school teacher who basically told her students Obama is great, and made them perform songs, and do Obama arts and crafts or whatever. The key difference there was she was imposing her political beliefs on her students, not engaging in critical thinking and exploration. She clearly crossed the line, no question. In and of itself, we do not know the dynamics under which these kids sang about Obama. So unless there is evidence of a rogue teacher that preachers her political philosophy to the students (especially after having been repeatedly asked to stop) then I'd agree with you and say the songs are inappropriate. Otherwise, if these kids are participating in a celebration of sorts (which they seem to be) there is nothing wrong with the celebration of a huge moment for minorities in America.
ReplyDeleteNote the dates of the videos: the first is a month after the election, the second is a week after the election, and the last two are during black history month. To me, it seems like an innocent celebration and affirmation of the great progress our country has made. These songs are not about Obama's policies, it's about a man of color who has, through long odds, became the leader of the free world. Not since Martin Luther King have we had a role model of that magnitude. If it is ok to sing "we shall overcome" then I think under this context, the Obama songs are ok.
