I'm exhausted. This morning I had the misfortune of taking part in a drama still unfolding on southern San Diego's interstate freeway system. An extremely distraught woman saw at fit at the break of dawn to stand on an overpass and threaten suicide.
Which is very sad of course and a harbinger of the many lost souls in our society that walk amongst us. Some are miswired, some mentally abused; many just need to be hospitalized and medicated.
But a missed question, (with the local press), in a situation like this is regarding the proper response of local authorities. Is it ok for authorities to literally shut down, (or allow to be), the entire artery-freeway system of a large city because of a deranged bridge-jumper? What should they do to expedite the situation? In this situation they saw it fit to coax, plead, beg; whatever you want to call it, with the woman. Thus, obviously, creating the apocalyptic-mess on the road this morning. The picture below represents tens of thousands of folks sitting and stranded on their way to work to make an honest buck. Emergency-type vehicles may have been delayed or stopped because of this ordeal. Connect the dots, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
What do you think the police, and/or other authorities should do in this case? Here is a list of answers, vote in the poll at the top right of the site.- They should do whatever it takes to save the woman's life, even if it means the I-5 is shut down for hours.
- They should negotiate and then move in to physically remove the woman.
- They should place an inflatable cushion on the ground below and then try to physically remove her.
- They should give her 15 minutes and then just do what they need to do.
- They should tase her and deal with the ramifications later,(no this isn't a joke).
- Other.

I used to see these idiots on I-294 in Chicago hold up traffic during rush hour. With all the bridges and shallow water, they have to add to my already frustrating drive time. Are they hoping the rest of us follow in their footsteps by adding to our commute misery?
ReplyDelete#3 sounds like a solution, if it's practical.
ReplyDeleteBeing a L.E.O. and had to deal with Jumpers, (which isn't pretty when they do land on the ground), we the Police are ordered to do what is called a "PLAN". Depending on the situation, a PLAN 1, PLAN 2 etc... is called in. With one that is on a major highway/freeway, the jumpers life of course is paramount, BUT, if the JUMPER jumps and lands on another car, pedestrian, POODLE, the city is libal for any and everything the jumper inflicts, including damages by passersby that that "witnessed" the said jump, at which they sue the city and state and so on and so forth............
ReplyDeleteThis is not only to save the persons life, but to save the city, county and state, $$$$$..... NO matter the inconvenience...... Nevermind the family sueing that the Police didn't do enough to save the persons life.
I remember a few decades ago when I got on the job, to old Paddy Wagon guys and a few of us, trying to talk a jumper off a roof............ They being seasoned vets of of the Chicago Police Department, said to us, "kids, let him do what he wants, and wait for HBT to get here". Then they held up Olympic like signs when the guy did jump and make a mess on the side walk. One guy gave him a 10.0 and the other gave him a 98.0. They argued about that he didnt do a complete flip before he landed. Sick cop humor I know. Yes I feel shutting down a total city is out of hand, but thank the PC police and the lawyers for turning someone who doesn't want to be on this planet anymore, due to hating life, mental illness or whatever for the lawsuits that follow. Just my humble opinion.
Imagine the pile up and possible lost lives if she did jump and traffic was flowing. Not pretty.
ReplyDeleteAnd Cpd has a point with the lawsuits, etc.
I think close the road, plant a mattress, and give her a shove would be a good option...
@ BB - I know what you mean.
ReplyDelete@ CJ - I think that 3 may have won the poll.
@ CPD - Wow, what a story, thanks for sharing. I imagine that you have many, many stories from your career. Thank you for you service too BTW.
@ Adrienne - I know, I think your option is probably the best...
