The Dalai Lama and Obama

Folks it looks like I am not going to be able to avoid foreign affairs topics here at LCR. This one a bit different and perhaps less complicated however than the Afghanistan war; albeit more bizarre and befuddling.

How about that for a headline? The same president and administration leadership that pow-wows with despots and is 'willing to talk to anyone' has snubbed the Dalai Lama. Obama is now the first president ever to not welcome the Nobel peace prize winner to Washington. In essence he has told the Dalai Lama to 'shove-it.'
This is why I blog, it really is.

The decision came after China stepped up a campaign urging nations to shun the Tibetan spiritual leader. The Buddhist monk arrived in Washington on Monday for a week of meetings with Congressional leaders, celebrity supporters and interest groups, but the president will not see him until after he has made his first visit to China next month.

Mr Obama's decision dismayed human rights and Tibetan support groups, who said he had made an unnecessary concession to the Chinese, who regard the Dalai Lama as a "splittist", despite his calls for autonomy rather than independence for Tibet. The Chinese invaded in 1950, forcing the young leader to
flee.

Sophie Richardson, Asia advocate for Human Rights Watch, said: "Presidents always meets the Dalai Lama and what happens? Absolutely nothing.

"This idea that if you are nice to the Chinese Communist Party up front you can cash in later is just wrong. If you lower the bar on human rights they will just move it lower and lower."

Folks, excuse me but this is one of the most prepostorous things that I have ever seen out of any administration in the United States. I am nearly speechless.
I agree with the Human Rights Watch advocate above - if the President lowers the bar on human rights, (or caters to the chi-coms to this extreme, validates them), they will just set their own record and actions re: human rights lower and lower.
I totally support the Human Rights Watch on this. Politics makes strange bedfellows.

  2. The President is starting to remind of Clinton in the 90s when he kissed the Europeans behind every year. Now, nearly 20 years later, it's the Chinese.

  4. You forget how Clinton allowed the chinese to get technology from us. Didn't he make some stupid comment about us having all the technology wasn't fair?

  5. This incident proves two things to me. First, BO is so high on himself being the one true world messiah that he is in no way going to share that with any other religious figure.

    Second, that we're so indebted to China, how on any basis can you say we're not a slave or the very least a satalite because Obama can slapped a tariff on tires which is going to lead to a trade war we can't win because China can just threaten, if not down right dump, to spread those 2 trillion that they own of our debt, which matches the entire defict of Obama's first year. The truth is here is we can't do much to resist Chinese interests because they hold all the economic cards. Not unless we're willing to tank the economy worse than it is already. Even if it's someting as asinine as meeting an exile religous leader.
