It was ambiguous earlier, here, here, but after going to Alaskan KTUU.com here and watching the video below and reading the article, it's official. She is resigning the governorship. Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell will be assuming the governorship July 26. She gave a speech in support of her reasoning involved with her resignation but any specifics involving future ambitions were clearly not present. Watch it below -
As I said, Palin is resigning, the reason is ambiguous. My mind races to several options or possibilities. One is that there is a personal family issue. This may be the case. The other is that she frankly is calling it quits for good. This scenario would be due to the recent accelerated personal attacks on her and her family. Sometimes family is the most important thing in one's life and she may have been pondering this and come to this conclusion and decision for the sanity and health of her family.
Another option is that she has decided to hit the road doing lectures and speaking arrangements. All with the intention of spreading the message of conservatism - the answer to every ill that we face. This could perhaps coincide with her not running for President as well. The last option, the one that I am hoping, praying, begging, pleading, jumping up and down for is that this signals an agressive undertaking for a 2012 presidency run. Please say it's so! News of this may take time to come out, if it is true. Also, I am crossing my fingers that she would run as an independent. Now that would be something.......

I truly think she would have a shot of winning the White House as an independent. Her popularity hasn't diminished in the least. She got the majority of the Republican vote last year because, like myself, people were voting for her and not McCain.
Jumping for hope with you.
I don't know about running for the Presidency, but I really want her kicking some politician behind in order to bring them back around to the real principles this country was founded on. She did a great job of that in the speech. Talking about the people's business and how defending the attacks was wasting the people's time and the people's money. The fact that she understands that politicians work for the people is what she needs to go on the rampage to teach everybody else out there.
I disagree -- this was not a great speech. A great speech communicates an idea clearly, forcefully, and persuasively. After the speech, you are still left wondering why she did it - as you point out, it could be any of a number of reasons.
Or maybe we're just so used to looking for ulterior motives, so used to our politicians not telling us the truth, that when we get it, we spend our time and energy trying to figure out what the REAL reason is.
I was surprised to see this on the news. I think like you LCR, it may be a combination of all things. The personal attacks on not just her, but her family and children. Now she can go on tour maybe, make lots of money, not have to answer to everyone anytime she takes a trip somewhere.
Then, she will be rejuvinated to undertake a presidential campaign. She can make herself a lot of money in the next year or two, and also decompress from the constant attacks. I still have to see exactly how this pans out. Thanks for the post! I'm with your wishes too!
One, I am shocked, two, we will know in time why she did this. Hopefully she has a good reason and it's not because she's in legal trouble.
blackandgold, jan - I agree
Spinster - I just hope that this doesn't mean she is forever MIA now. We need her.
TL - It's funny, I just amended my post with your point, it was too ambiguous to be considered a great speech. Thanks for pointin that out, I'm trying to do 15 things here all at once!
Bunni - We'll see, we can hope and pray.
Rightguy - Indeed, I hope for the same!
She quit because of personal attacks? I respect your opinions, but let's be a bit realistic here, what politician *doesn't* suffer from a barrage of personal attacks? I mean by comparision, Obama had to get a secret service detail early in the presidential run because of death threats (let alone the harboring with terrorists sentiment that kicked up some old racial dirt from the carpet).
There is nothing orthodox about the way she left office. Unless there is some super incredible extenuating circumstance, the captain NEVER leaves the ship first. She left her people hanging out to dry, so unless there is a good reason for it, I don't know how anyone could support that. It's not like here popularity rating was 20%...
I love Sarah Palin. I think she's a ray of light in the political muck that is Washington. However, if she's going to look at a run in 2012, I hope she is able to beef up some of her experience.
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot I like and she is far more qualified than Obama. However,I don't want to see on the job foreign policy training like we are seeing with Obama. I love what she says about economic policy, but I'd like to see her running things on a bigger scale.
In other words, I love what she says. It seems to mesh with what she does, I'd just like to see it all on a national scale before seeing her on the ticket. Picking up after Obama's a big task and we'll need a modern day Reagan to fix it all:)
tL,
I mostly agree with you, except those in the public light have put her on hate sex lists and have made crude jokes about her children. I think you need a tough skin for jokes and criticism, but clearly there is a lot that's gone too far and well beyond what Obama has to put up with.
I see hate mail as a different beast than public attacks. It's apples and oranges. Clearly you can't compare a crude joke from Letterman and a death threat from a skinhead.
To "The Law": Palin's personal attacks included 15 frivolous ethics complaints against her that have caused Alaska 2 million dollars in legal bills and a half million in personal debt for the same reason. See Mark Levin's comments posted at my site.
To LCR: I agree with you 100% - I hope that this is the beginning of a more prominent political role for Palin the future of this country.
I'm a HUGE supporter of Sarah Palin. Anyone who reads my blog, or any comments related to her, knows that. I was completely and totally taken off guard when I got on my laptop today and saw on my homepage that she's resigning. However...I have faith in her, and I believe she knows what she's doing.
If she chooses not to run for office ever again, she will play a pivotal role in the future of the conservative movement, as well as the futures of countless politicians. If this is her first step towards running for a nation-wide office, such as POTUS, then I can see how this would be a great thing to do: we can see Sarah uncensored. She'll have nobody to answer to but herself, and can get out there and rip into Obama like we know she can and, to a certain extent, does.
She can help campaign next year for...well, just about anybody, and have the IOUs rolling in once she announces her bid for the presidency. She can get out there, do speaking events, lectures, etc. and paint herself as the antithesis to Obama and his policies, and be a vocal opponent to the path he's taking us down. Come election time, she can point out that she blasted Obama's failed policies 'way back when' and then proceed to present alternatives.
I say it's too early to make any assumptions. She was slightly ambiguous with her long-term plans, but very clear about her short-term plans. Sarah Palin is not done with politics, that's for sure, but her personal role is yet to be defined. I say we put our faith in her for now and accept that Sarah Palin will do what is best for both herself and the country.
I am forever hopeful it is for the common good of her, her family and our nation. But i am always skeptical as well. I hope there isn't some sort of bombshell coming out, and she is resigning before the sharks start smelling the blood.
Having a developmently disable child myself, who could blame her for getting out. The attacks on her baby are DISGUSTING. Every American should be ashamed that is acceptable in the our political world. Who could blame her for taking them out of that fishbowl for a while. She can go on a speaking tour, start a think tank about energy sources and build a better profile and protect her children at the same time.
@ The Law - I respect your opinion too and agree that something doesn't add up, it saddens me though. To say however that Palin has suffered the *normal* abuse that the press hands out to a pol is simply not true.
@ Cons Gen - I agree with you too, she is at times a bit rusty and unaccustomed, but man she is real! It may all be a moot point now anyway.
@ Stogie - Thanks for reading and with the graphics help too, you rock!
@ Drooz - I know man, I thought that this would bum you out because I know that you are a big fan. I guess there is upside even if she doesn't run for POTUS.
@ Cpdcoppurr - Me too.
@ Consgirl - They are disgusting, there is no shame in our country any more it is outrageous.
@ Readers - Tell me how you like the new graphics that I am tinkering with, a bug huge hat-tip to Stogie for the help! Visit his blog on my blogroll, it's Saberpoint.com.
I'm not giving up on her--
Tired of 'slick' Rsss --
C-CS
The only thing that makes sense to me at this moment is that she is going to head up a third party. The Rebublicans have all but thrown her under the bus and the libs hate her. She is not quiting. She is getting to work as early as possible to make a viable third party. She has no other choice if she is going to live by her convictions. She will make her case directly to the people. I wish her well.
@ Christian Soldier - I'm not either, we'll see what happens!
@ NoLeftTurn - Great theory, I think that I will update the post with that, thanks!
Whenever I hear Sarah Palin speak, it is as if I hear again the best POTUS of my lifetime--Ronald Reagan. God Bless America!!
Trig needs her and she needs him. That is what she said that I can believe the most. Can any of you imagine what it has been like for that family over the past year?
Beyond that, I would LOVE to see her get Michael Steele's job!! Now that is some thing where she could make a HUGE difference. Then she could look for the POTUS position in 2016 or 2020.
I know it's too much to expect, but I would love it if the MSM would stick to the news and lay off the speculation. At this point, all they can do is take Palin at her word as to why she's quitting. If they were in the habit of investigating real stories instead of constantly gossiping, they might have been better prepared for this story.
If the MSM can dig up some newsworthy info that Palin hasn't told us, they can report it when they know it. Otherwise they should do their job and report the NEWS.
LCR,
IMHO, this was one of the saviest, most strategic moves Sarah has made yet. Whether she decides to run as an indie or not, does not matter; I will be very surprised if she does not run. Sarah just took away the political sword hanging over her head as a public official. She just cut Mitt Romney's attacks against her off at the knees and no longer has a target painted on her back. If the attacks continue, it will look like a group of very frightened people attacking a private person for no reason. Meanwhile, she defines her image, not the moonbats and the republicans that are more interested in power than what is best for the country. Sarah just went on the offensive in this little game of chess in a completely unconventional manner that will not hurt her in the future. I applaud her and will be supporting her 100% (and I've been an indie for 29 years).
And for all of those people out there that think Sarah is the second coming of Reagan, Ronnie isn't even in her class.
I am confused about this announcement...
I agree, Sarah Palin is great; a breath of fresh air. I worry a little, though, about the 3rd party idea. It's never worked in a Presidential election and just splits the vote. Maybe, by some miracle, Sarah can motivate the Republican Party to get back to their conservative roots - Reagan style. Democrat-lite isn't working for them and the grassroots people are becoming more vocal every day. Our numbers will increase with every tax increase forced upon the American people. The RINOs better take heed because their days are numbered. Good luck to Sarah in whatever her future holds.
I don't honestly see how a move like this helps Sarah Palin if he wants a future in the national GOP. Already it's more than just Democrats who see her as a "quitter":

Plus, Palin has such weird and winding rationale for this move. I'm puzzled, but I will say this: she did display a libertarian impulse in that you can accomplish things outside of government. Could it be that she's telling us that government is not the answer and might actually live by it? To that I say, good for Sarah.
@ Nac - I agree
@ Average American - I agree!
@ RK They will never do it, I just wish that I knew if she was in the running for POTUS
@ Logistics - Do you think that she will run for POTUS?
@ Matthew Aviable - I was/am still too
@ Cons Lady - I agree
@ Carl W - I don't see how it helps either, I'm still confused about it.
I have to say, LCR, I don't completely agree with her running as an Independent. It would, honestly, be rather pointless in the end. The best she could do is split a good chunk of votes away from the Republican candidate, leaving us with a definite Obama victory. I don't see anyone, including Sarah Palin, having the ability to divert enough votes away from the two major parties to pull off a victory.
If we didn't have a two-party system, I would definitely agree. I'm not terribly proud to call myself a Republican anymore, I usually just say "ridiculously conservative," but sometimes you have to play the game to get the rewards, no matter how much you'd like to do the opposite. And in this situation, I think Sarah plays by her own rules often enough that running as a Republican won't lump her with some of the more boneheaded members of the party, except in the minds of those still blaming Bush for everything wrong in the country. But those people don't really matter very much.
