Update : Tinkering with Layout and Template

I've made a lot of friends lately in the blogosphere. There are a few that I have even asked advice of. Rightgirl from Girl on the Right for instance, she runs a tight ship and actually makes her living working as a blogger and columnist. She told me that she blogged for 3 years before she turned it into something. Anyway I asked her to take a peek at my blog and.....she liked the content, loved the Turncoat 8 piece. She also added that I should possibly try a different template and background color. One of the several reasons for this being that many readers secretly read blogs in their cubes (she's Canadian), and will steer clear of darker background sites that have an aesthetic which may seem non-work-related. Remember that scene in Office Space where Peter is playing Tetris? Uhhh, yahhhh.....well, he didn't care about getting fired so did as he pleased. I on the other hand don't want any of my readers to get fired so I am trying a new look here at the Left Coast Rebel. I am open to your input.

Also I read this in the comment section over at The Other McCain when he ran me as the Best Blog of the Day.

Thanks for the tip, but reverse-type blogs,
(white type on black background) are too hard
to read.
Cynthia

Hmmm, I don't want to be reverse type and I sure don't want my blog to be hard to read. I was pondering this thought several weeks ago as well.....

Do you like it? Readers, I'm listening.........

  1. I also find the dark backgrounds difficult to read. I was willing to do it, but I like the change.

  2. I like the new colors. The other was pretty, and I wouldn't say I had a hard time reading it, but this is clearer. You're content always made it worth it for me anyway. If it had been a poka dot background with fucshia font, I'd have still read it. But I still like basic black and white best.

  3. I like it!

I read somewhere on RSMs blog that readers should be able to see new content when they click on a blog and not a large picture at the top, but honestly, that's never bothered me. I love looking at the pics on snaggletoothie's blog and Flopping Aces also has a large logo. So I'm not sure what the conventional wisdom really is on that.

I agree with Spinsterpov - your content is what makes me click over. It's always first rate.

And I LOVE Office Space! :)

  4. Great! I really did have problems with the white on black!

Any way to see a close up of your face? From a distance, you look pretty good, hahaha.

  5. Looks good. I am so glad you kept that picture of you though. I love that shot.

  6. It is good to experiment with such things. It keeps things interesting. Kook often does the same thing with the "manifesto".

  7. I also think there are several bloggers here who are doing work worthy of getting paid for it. I have often wondered if there was some way we could all team up and form something on the level of "the Kos" or the "Huffandpuff post."

  8. Fittoseejane - Good, I'll stick with this new look!

    blackandgold - Good, thanks!

Spinster - Thank, I agree that the other font/color was prettier but I think I'm sticking with this for now

Pat - A large picture as in me on the rock? Interesting...

    Kendra - I'll see what I can do :)

Jan - I know, I like that you guys spice it up too. Huffandpuff, I like that, I'll use it in the future!

  9. Like the change. Yes, it is MUCH easier to read, which means I will stop by more often. ;-) I'm so glad you are looking out for us in the respect of helping us keep our jobs. Always a good thing.

  12. You could also use the "Deadly Kos" too.

  13. Andrew - funny thing is I do go to those sites to see what the enemy is up to sometimes

  14. Personally, I enjoyed the original template. But if it comes down to whether it is read or not based on a template, then by all means, use whatever other people desire. This is a free market way of sorting things out.

My only criticism is in how one posts comments. I don't like the current model, as you have to sign out if you want to post anotyher comment... it becomes tedious. Personally, I prefer the one stop method Dondero has over at Libertarian Republican. But other than that, your blog is in my top five, Tim.

  15. I do to, just to see a good horror flick once in a while. I am always stunned by the lies and profanity that are so rampant on those sites. Liberals deem themselves the most intelligent people in the country yet they talk like ghetto trash. As for myself, I can take a step back and look at what our various sites are like without bias. Liberals obviously lack that capacity. That is why our sites tend to be self policing when it comes to unnecessary hateful and vulgar language while liberal sites flourish on it.

  16. I just wanted to tell the readers here that I worked much of the weekend on a collaboration with C-Gen on a climate piece. It is in abbreviated form on my blog on sunday and the full version is on C-Gen's blog. Given the work that both of us put in on it, I suggest everyone check it out. It will give you some very simple ways to shut down any argument in favor of global warming.

  17. I like it LCR and now it has me thinking I should change mine. I have also been thinking of getting rid of some of the side bar stuff.
it is getting too cluttered. But I wanted to make it kind of a one stop shop experience if someone did not want to leave...

  18. I am not sure what William meant about the comments section, but I do know that Intense Debate is pretty awesome and lets people keep up with the comments easier.
I notice that you often have to respond to several commenters at once and intense debate helps with being able to reply to a specific comment.

  19. I can vouch for that. Having "intense debate" on KOOK's blog makes it easy and fun to have a chat since you can easily tell who is commenting to whom.

  20. William - thanks, I'll see if I can incorporate that comment system here, thanks for the heads-up

Andrew - Funny, my post today is on that topic! I will def check out that piece.

KOOK - keep me posted on the changes, it's kind of like I am spring cleaning. I'll also consider the message system you guys have!

  21. Hi LCR: I agree with others, the content is what brings us here. I'm glad your blog is really catching on, you are getting lots of followers, so it's working.

I like this version better, it's a bit easier to read. I don't go on my blogger, or read my followers at work. There are lots of spys there, like the creepy IT guy. They would all have a stroke if they knew I was a conservative patriot journalist...hee hee. They are a bunch of liberal hypocrites of the worst order. If people knew where I worked, they'd faint. I even have a separate twitter name I just use at work.

Thanks for thinking of us, and as usual, your stellar info. I linked to your 8 Traitors Piece on my last post. Bye, Bunni

  22. I always thought you had a very clean and well structured blog. I think that you should keep up with what you are doing.

  23. Its much easier on the eyes after a few hours of reading screens.

Keep up the great work you're doing...Cheers mate.
